Stevie.g - Doing too much?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Scottbot » Fri Apr 30, 2004 11:24 am

For much of this season it feels like we have become a
one-man team with the Captain shouldering the burden of 11. Stevie.G seems to have so little confidence in the in his team-mates to use the ball that he seems to be playing in virtually every position on the pitch. It could be argued that he sometimes plays in a way that is detrimental to the team.

e.g. Bullying own players off the ball, getting caught out of position trying to do too much, has become the focal point for everything the team does well, has become so popular (as popular as Robbie in his heyday) with the Anfield crowd while team-mates recieve (eg. Kewell, Murphy) indifferent treatment from the supporters.

Don't jump down my throats lads! I don't necessarily subscribe to this but thought it would be interesting to hear your thoughts.

yes i agree he is doing too much at times, but that is not down to him, it is down to the incompetence and laziness of others. for example, at old trafford he provided the ONLY moment of skill or class in the whole game. who else in our side actually went forward on a run with the ball?

i hope the guy is not completely burned out for the summer. everyone knows that with gerrard playing, england are a much better side (they have never lost). this season has been much better in the fact that he hasn't really picked up any of these niggling injuries which have hampered his career.

follow the leader! ???

England lost their last game with Gerrard the Captain. Better to get it outta the way before the Euros :)

that game may as well be wiped from the memory books. it was the biggest waste of time in international history.

stmichael the Liverpool v Man U game i can recall that the best chance of the match (after the penalty obviously) was created by Owen and Riise.  Unfortunately there was no one in support.  I am not saying anything bad about Gerrard, on the contrary I think he is our most important player at the moment, but it shows other teammembers can play football when they want to and Gerrard isn't the only player on the team.  I think we need to remember that, he physically can not play in every position on the team.  The win against Man U would not have been possible if Gerrard was the only player on the team because he cannot cover the whole pitch simultaneously.  He is an excellent player but he is only human.

Theres also talk of finnan staying right midfield, maybe houllier will go more offensive! As for Stevey G, he is doing a lot, it is up to the other players toraise the standard, everyone needs some more confidence. Im actually looking forward to the last few games now, a little bit of confidence has crept in with me as well. No matter what though, i cheer on every player as much as the next

I believe he is happier doing so much than being assumed he is doing less. His reputation will rise for doing much more than expected.
