From the echo.

We need a lethal weapon up front Jan 24 2006

By Ian Rush, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ won't need to watch a re-run of the defeat to Manchester United to know where his side came unstuck.

There's still a vacancy in his squad for a lethal finisher. Until the Reds find one, there's always a danger they'll suffer in fixtures such as this.

When you go to Old Trafford, you know chances are going to be few and far between. That's where true quality shows.

Unfortunately, Liverpool squandered opportunities which came their way.

It's not particularly pleasant to point the finger at individuals in such circumstances because no-one deliberately tries to miss a chance.

But there are times when you just have to acknowledge the class didn't show when it mattered in front of goal.

Benitez won't be surprised by this, of course.

We all know he tried to sign Michael Owen in the summer, and no strikers have arrived since then.

There's no question Liverpool still look short in this area. Against lesser sides, it may not appear so apparent.

But in the toughest venues against the best defenders, you simply can't afford to carry anyone.

I suspect it's too late in the month for anyone to join for the rest of the season.

In fact, one of the more natural finishers has temporarily left the club to improve his fitness.

Neil Mellor is the kind of poacher who'll always pop up with a goal and it's a shame he's been out for so long.

I worked with Mellor when I was at Liverpool. Appearances are deceptive with him because of his style of play, but I'll bet he'll score plenty for Wigan between now and May.

Despite the defeat to United, Liverpool remain in contention for the runners-up spot.

But if they're to close the gap to Chelsea before the start of next season, a goalscorer must be at the top of the recruitment list.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Thanks GH, a few more quid thrown away.

I still haven't heard from those guys on this site who raved about him before he came and promised great things. Come on, own up!!!

Thank also GH for the CL win last year coz its his players that won it plus alonso and garcia.   :)

You tart.

Rafa Benitez "won us" the CL with superior tactics, whilst employing certain players from GH that the frenchman couldn't make work (Biscan, etc) plus Garcia, Alonso, JC, Stevie G, Carson, Mellor, Warnock, Josemi and Nunez.

None of these were GH signings, but 5 were Benitez signings.

Gimp.  :no

Well, I'm going to stick my neck out and back him, all he needs is a bit of confidence and nous in front of goal and he'll be banging them in.

I reckon he would have been losing the ball 95% of the time/ Miscontrolling every pass/ closing his eyes for headers/ blasting over from 2 yards/running around with his head up his aarse/falling over/ lifting his hands to the heavens and shaking his fkn head in disbelief -

Sounds familiar  :p

GH did not win the champions league....Rafa bringing on hamaan for finnan wion the champions league last year..His tactics were a big factor..

Also am backing Cisse to become good for us..He's had a bad season and he's well below form but he's young, had good pace and is deadly when he wants to be...He's always been in good form for France cant understand how he cant play that well for us

what pi$$es most fans off is cisse's lack of effort on sunday, not just his lack of ability. crouch had a shocker and gerrard probably had his worst game of the season, but those two both always give 100% everytime they play.

i'll always support cisse whilst he plays for this club but i won't accept players not giving their all and being lazy.

Biscan is not worse than Cisse. Biscan could control a ball at least.

What I cant understand from Cisse is that its a WC year plus he can still be sold or loaned out before the window shuts, or even be sold at the end of the season.
Why cant he listen to what one of the best manager in europe is trying to teach him?
Why doesnt he put effort in why always throwing a wobbler when the ball is not placed at his feet or he loses the ball, or gives it away constantly.
Ive had a bloody nough of him Ive been one of his biggest supporters but I cannot defend him any more.
On sunday I wanted to boot the telly in he wound me up so much.
Maybe he would have done better under Houllier or if he hadnt have spent practicaly his first season out injured maybe he would be a different player, we will never know.

Can't see Cisse ever making it to be honest.  His confidence is shot and he looks anxious every time he plays.  Unlike Crouch he hasn't got the good touch or awareness to compensate for it.  Best thing for the lad and for LFC is for him to move on, we'll probably see a different player for someone else unfortunately.  Can't see us getting more than £5 or £6 million for him though, unless he has a good World Cup :(

Exactly Lynds. How many time have we seen him do this? After a miss or he loses the ball, instead of trying to get the ball back or concentrate on the game we always see him pulling a f**king face or hands on his hips letting the opposition have time on their hands rather than pressurising them.

If he ever goes to Rafa and wants to know why he isn't being picked for games or on the subs bench, all rafa needs to do is get a video out of THAT miss.

His attitude is all wrong - that's why he doesn't chase players, close down keepers, etc, etc. He's more concerned with how he looks than the team.

And is it me but has he only got one setting when in front of goal i.e. T**T IT!!!
