One of the issues affecting Spain is that as a country it has never benefitted from having large immigrant populations of diverse ethnicity, unlike places such as the UK and France where large scale immigration from former colonial territories has led to a better understanding and acceptance of people of different races.
Japan and Spain are the only 2 major developed "western" countries where this is the case.
Any racism inherent in Spanish society (or any other society for that matter) is largely based upon fear arising from lack of knowledge and understanding.
