Owen - To barcelona?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I will be extremely disappointed if Owen leaves, he has been a fantastic player for us and could well be a legend at Anfield if he stays. However if he doesn't sign a new contract this summer we may have too look to offloadas it would be a very bad thing if he left on a Bosman, I hope with all my heart he re-signs, we need Owen.

I think this sums the reason why LFC need MO perfectly, taken from thisisanfield.com:

No doubt this will receive a mixed response but Michael Owen is set to sign a new deal to stay at Anfield for 2006 I believe. Rick Parry has confirmed that negotiations have taken place and both parties are satisisfied with how proceedings are going.

I am aware that Michael has split Liverpudlians down the middle this season with some inept displays but personally, I am overjoyed by this news.

Alright, Michael hasn't been at his best this season. He's struggled with form and injuries but has still managed to put away 17 goals in 34 games. Exactly 1 goal every 2 games. Not that bad really considering this has been one of his worst campaigns.

This proves that Michael is still the closest thing we have to a goalscorer. With Heskey being inconsistent, Baros lacking the finishing touches to his endeavour, Flo showing promise but naivety in front of goal and Diouf firing so many blanks he must be sterile; we rely on Michael's goals.

There have been question marks over his loyalty this season from some sections of the Liverpool faithful but I won't hear any of it. If Michael wasn't loyal, then why would he spend his whole career at the club and begin negotiating a new contract? I think it is an insult to one of our finest players in history to put his loyalty under the spotlight. I'll admit there have been times when he has been lacklustre but I think that is down to the formations he's been playing in. Michael needs a strike partner so playing him in a 4-5-1 at home is ludicrous. How would you feel if you were one of the best strikers in the world but had to put up with our poor excuse of a midfield supplying you with scraps that a dog would turn away?

The future of Liverpool will almost certainly be shaped around Owen and Gerrard. It is essential Michael stays. I've even heard talk that we should let Michael go because of Cisse's arrival. What if Cisse is another Diouf? The fact is, Michael is a proven goal scorer. Some things are inevitable in life. The sun rises in the east, sets in the west and Michael Owen scores goals.

If you look at when owen scores this season its usually a game we've already won the game. What i mean is if alot of the matchs where he scores are games where we score more than 1 goal and have the game won regardless of his goal.I know this may sound stupid to you.but think about it.Its true.My point at the end of the day is i dont think we'l miss him.And 25m could get a great striker.Lets all be honest. He hasnt played well for nearly 2 years now.And i think we'd be lucky to get 10 for him.I think he could perform to his full potential at another club.i.e. better club.Hes given alot of service to liverpool and i dont think we should hold him back when its fairly clear he doesnt want to stay.

Puddy you're in la la land mate. Owen is one of the best strikers in the world and is suffering a dip in form and confidence partially explained by the poor performances of his team mates around him (SG excepted). Even so, his goal to game ratio is still 1:2 which ain't exactly dire is it? Sorry to use a cr#p old cliche but form is temporary, class is permanent.

To let Owen go would be foolhardy in the extreme. And as for your estimate of £10m I only hope for our sake that was a joke, if not then you'd better lay off the ale this early in the morning.  ???

The only circumstances in which I'd let him go is if we got a ridiculous offer from a club on the continent. I woudn't sell him to Chelsea for all the tea in China.

Puddy was it Stella or Guiness on the corn flakes this morning?  :)

Gotta be Tetley's for me. Not biased cos it's English, cos I'm actully Welsh. But then again so is Owen (arguably) so maybe that's why I'm biased toward him? Ah who cares? Cup of tea & a chocolate hob-nob please....

I think all this talk about owen not playing well for 2 seasons is a load of c**p. He's had alot of injuries but mainly GH has played him upfront with so many different strike partners that he doesn't know where he's coming or going.

Also the service that he gets is so bad (Stevie G apart ) that he is often seen in midfield trying to get involved. This is not where we need owen to be. He needs to playing on the shoulder of defenders making his runs in behind. Owen stay get rid of the S**t around him.

I agree with Rimetto but how many players we got to try alongside him before we decide to try something else? Owen is a fantastic player, but so was fowler and he just didnt fit in with the style of play. As usual it comes down to what happens with GH... we need to find out asap

we just need to hope that cisse is the guy to partner owen. until he gets a partner who he can form a successful partnership with he will never be the player he once was.

Owen (and maybe Gerrard) is the only world class player in the team, he has had a poor season due to injury and his misses being really ill.

I would hate to see him go but I think he is wasting his talent at Liverpool. He is playing for a third rate team who huff the ball up the despicable Heskey and Owen tries to get onto the end of the odd flick on. Or he's up front by himself getting f##k all service from Smicer, Diao, Diouf & co.

I wish him the best if he goes to a non-English club and hopefully the money will be spent on a few players and a new manager.

someone on another messageboard was advocating selling owen and buying drogba from marseille. that's nonsense. the guys good but he's not BETTER than owen. you only sell if you can bring someone in who is better.

The great tactical genius that is Foolier has used a racehorse (Owen) to pull a milk float (the rest of our attack) . Owen is rated among the worlds top ten strkers despite having to play to Fooliers plan. If he leaves for spain/italy you will see a rejuvenated Owen scoring goals for fun. Meanwhle we'll still be here debating Fooliers latest fk up.Don't blame Owen we all know where the real responsibility for the slow disintergration of our club lies.:(
