Manure vs chelsea - Puts our situation in perspective

The Premiership - General Discussion

I'm sure a great deal of you watched the other semi final last night, and I must say I enjoyed it. To be honest I really couldnt give a fig who won, so unlike watching the Reds, I could relax. However I made some observations which blatantly stood out and put into perspective how we have to improve.

Firstly. If you look at both defences, they are ahead of us by some way. Rio and Terry are top draw. And although Carra has come on leaps and bounds, hes not in their league or even Campbell's for that matter. Both teams have full backs that can get forward, but defend even better. Which is surely their first objective. Also, is it me, or is rio ferdinand turning into sideshow bob?  :D

Up front, both teams have far more attacking options than us. Giggs and Ronaldo, Duff and Robben. All quality. And Arsenal with Henry and Reyes, need I say more. What also impressed me with Chelsea was how Robben and Duff were working their backsides off, both attacking AND defending.

The one area where I feel they are all weaker, is midfield. Keeno, class as he is, is getting a little long in the tooth. Lampard, is all bells and whistles, but really does not have the game to dominate midfield on his own. Looking at Arsenal, is it any surprise that since the Vieira to Madrid rumour, hes gone off the boil, and so have they.

Whereas, we have Stevie G. Is it any wonder Fergie has said he would give anything for him. Wenger rates him above any other non Arsenal player, and we all know Chelsea still want him more than anyone else.

WHY?

Because hes the missing link. All three teams have easily the best defences and attackers in the Premiership. But of the three zones, Defence, Midfield and Attack, on a good day, we are closer to competing with the top three in midfield than anywhere else!

In fact with Gerrard, Hamann, and Alonso I would give any of their midfields a run for their money!

WE MUST GET NEW INVESTMENT ASAP.
WE MUST GET 4TH SPOT.
WE MUST KEEP STEVIE G.

David you have done the Moores dynasty proud, and all of us too. But what is the real difference between us and Chelsea now?

MONEY

Really nothing else. Ok Mourino is class, but Chelsea would not have secured his services without money. And big dosh at that. Same for most of their squad.

If we had some big long term investment, and could go out and buy 4-5 top drawer players, would we be in their league, not battling with the likes of toon and villa like we are now?

The longer the investment saga drags on, the better for Parry and all those who put their own interests before the club's interests. If we cannot secure investment before summer, the Board will have to sanction the sale of Gerrard. Given Gerrard's earlier remarks which made people questioned his loyalty to the club, he will be blamed for wanting to leave whereas Parry and co will be considered as doing the right thing for the club (the player has set his mind elsewhere already, no player is irreplaceable, we cannot let him go for a free, we need money to rebuild, blah blah blah...).

What if Parry and Moores have already made up their mind to sell Gerrard in the summer as a means to raise funds and to buy themselves more time? I don't think Rafa will get half of Gerrard's transfer fee bearing in mind the cost of the new stadium and the possibility of no CL football next season.

I'm not interested in boardroom politics. All I want is some genuine reds with a winning mentality to lead the club out of this mess. Many of us have gradually accepted the loss of Gerrard, and argue that the blow will be softened by Alonso and a handsome transfer fee. I don't buy that at all. If our ultimate aim is to win the Premiership and then the Champions League, selling our best players to main rivals is just like shooting our own feet. The bigger picture is, how much longer do you think we can keep Alonso/Baros/Morientes/Kewell if we can only challenge for 4th place every year? If anyone has to go for the sake of rebuilding Liverpool into a real force again, I know Gerrard is not yet on my list. :(
