Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby MilitiaRusher » Sat Jan 14, 2006 6:23 pm

Reina: 8 Commanding display from our Number 1 but was generally quiet throughout the game. Never looked like conceding

Finnan: 8 Yet another solid performance from the Irishmen, all round attacking and defensive contribution.

Carragher: 8 Solid display and always gave 110%.

Hyypia: 8 A good defensive contribution, tackling aerial threat really well. Had a good game going forward.

Riise: 6 The poorer out of the back 4 and looked vulnerable at times, especially early in the second half when Jenas easily rounded him, which could have produced a goal for Keane. Standard attacking contribution.

Gerrard: 7 Leading display from the skipper, covering each and every blade of grass on the pitch. Many times being too ambitious on his long range efforts and could have passed.

Sissoko: 7 A below-par performance in the first half but improved leaps and bounds in the second half, where his defensive interventions were crucial. Good day going forward.

Alonso: 7 One of his quieter days but still a routine performance.  Generally did what was required.

Kewell: 9 Brilliant from the Aussie. Superb volley for the sole goal of the game and could have had another. Many improvements are still there to be made though.

Morientes: 6 Very quiet game upfront and simply beyond me how he is in the starting eleven. Had a well taken chance in the first half with his header shaving the crossbar.

Crouch: 6 A quiet game for him but still sometimes essential for the linkup play between the midfield and the attack. Lacked composure for some of his headers.

Cisse: 6 Looked sharp when he came on, running at defenders, but confidence still clearly lacking from him.

Warnock: N/A

Can't argue with your ratings

But Finnan should have gotten a 9 too....the best right-back in the premiership IMO  :bowdown

I disagree both Morientes and Crouch score. I'd give a 9 to Finnan. I wouldn't give him a 10 because that will be the day in which he picks the ball in the defence go upfront, dribble the goalie and scores. So a 9 will be fine.

When you say he was generally quiet throughout the game what do you mean exactly? Are you referring to the volume of his instruction to his defenders, or the fact that he didn't try any long range shots or fifty yard through balls? Or do you mean maybe that Spurs didn't have that many shots? Please understand I'm not taking the p!ss I just don't follow.

BTW, what would be your line-up for the next game?  :D

I disagree with the Alonso rating, it was the poorest game I have seen him play (everyone has an off day) he was off the pace today

That's the first thing that passed my head too bigmick - about Reina. What else do you expect from a keeper who only had to save one shot ( which was an excellent save by the way ) and clear one or two crosses lol?

I also think Gerrard has been overrated by people on this forum in his last two game's as well, he's past the ball away and wasted too many through ball chances by his standard's against Luton and Spurs, not to mention some really poor long range effort's that lacked pace and direction ( in a sense that they were straight at the keeper )!

I think you've rated Crouch a bit too low, I'd have given him at least a 7. Fair enough he missed two golden opportunities to put us in front, but he made some nice flick on's and was generally good with the ball at his feet.

In fact, around here in the northern Spain we tend to say that many times, a game with few interventions of the keeper is actually harder for them, if you compare with one that they have more workload (not too much), since it requires a lot of concentration to do well in those actions

I understand what you mean Sabre, I think. You're pointing out that a keeper can maybe loose concentration during a game if he hasn't been involved much, then when he's called upon it's like a surprise and he isn't ready for it - where as a keeper getting bombarded with shot's is on full concentration, is that what you mean?

Anyway, in the UK when people say a player was quiet it usual referre's to them not playing or getting involved as much as he should, so we say he was quiet. For a keeper it's more suitable to say he had nothing to do rather than he was quiet as a keeper can't get involved unless there is shot's at his goal.

Indeed. Thank you for sorting out that :D

Aerial balls are a matter of repetition and confidence many times, it turns out to happen that the first or second high ball are the toughest one for the keeper as he's "not in the match" yet. Once he got 3 or 4 balls like that, often they do those securely (unless he's :censored:).

Many times, this games with few chances for the opposition, are tough for a keeper.

watched the match on tv at a friend's house who is also a big spurs fan -- we noticed something that someone at the game could clarify -- it appeared that davids was a shadow to alonso which would result in his 'quietness' -- we've both noticed this before and usually figure that it may be a tactic to take xabi out of the game and deal with gerrard

is this what is happening??
