There have been some unbelievable free kick takers over the years. Beckham is probably as good as any of them, but Mijailovic (sp?) and Del Pierro were awesome in the Serie A in Italy. My favourite of all time though is Ronald Koeman, being half dutch I saw a lot of him and he was unreal. He curled them a la Beckham but he blasted them liek Riise too, he could do anything with a dead ball.
As for Liverpool "needing" one to be a better side I think that is absolute rubbish. I mean would you drop Gerrard or Alonso for an Alan Thompson just because he could hit a free kick? I thought not. The ability to kick a free kick with regular success is a bonus in any player and certainly does not make him a transfer target for us or any other team. And as mentioned we have some pretty able players in that department.

We should try that again - the best I've seen scored by LFC.

alas we dont have cally playing anymore.
we have gerrard, alonso, riise, hamaan and kewell who can all take a decent free kick. i certainly wouldnt buy a player just because he was good at free kicks and i doubt if anyone through out their career has a sucess rate over 20% at taking free kicks.
best free kick taker i seen at anfield was jan molby, closely followed by john barnes.

I don't think having a free-kick specialist is important to be honest.  It's more important to get players in that fit the team and who will do more damage in open play.  Even the best of free kick takers will only score 4-5 per season at most so it's not worth it.  But if you have a player already that can do it it's a nice bonus.

For me, with Gerrard and Riises' powerful shots and Alonso's accuracy we have enough quality variation in what we can try to do from free-kicks.  Benitez has come up with some nice set-plays in order to make new angles for shots from free-kicks, I don't think this area is a weakness for us.

As for established free-kick specialists, Beckham is the best I've seen.  Although I remember Koeman in his day being pretty lethal too.  An example of an average player who shouldnt be anywhere near a top team but is fantastic at free-kicks is Ian Harte.  Amazing from dead balls.  I remember watching a pre-season game for Leeds where he scored a hat-trick of free kicks in the same game, never seen anything like it, all top strikes.

Why is anyone taking this glory hunting tart on?

Clearly a windup merchant.

don't be to harsh on him- judging by his name he's probably only 4/5 years old.

I would like some one who can deliver a better cross from a free kick, Im constantly seeing freekicks easily delt with by defences of flying straight out of play. As for shooting I would like to see a player who is better at freekicks than gerrard.

As for corners i think the same aplies.

Who said anything about selling gerrard.

People are merely stating that maybe one of our new signings in january should be able to take free kicks. I'd rather have gerrard in the box ready to head the ball in than see him taking the freekicks or corners.

Simao is a freekick taker, ok that deal is off but he would have been good.

gerrards one of the best crossers in the country, maybe only beckhams better but he cant tackle, sprint or cover ground like steven. i really dont know what you want out of the lad, he`s allready the best midfielder in my opinion to play for the club and i`ve been watching them since the mid seventies and look back through rose tinted glasses if i`m honest with myself.
not even nostalgic me can say there`s been a better centre mid player. i bet you werent thinking he cant take free kicks when he scored in last years derby.

L'Equipe did their best 11 of 2006 last week.

They put Gerrard in it and said there was no better centre mid player in the world.

He is the best midfielder in the world and I agree he is a good crosser, but I would wather have him in the box on the end of a cross.

just watch the trebble season and see how many headers from corners and freekicks he scores.

and to qualify a point I made i do see him miss place his freekicks from time to time.

I did not even start to doubt gerrards ability no were does it say he isnt brilliant I am stating a fact that he would be better suited on the end of a cross than delivering one.
