Luton Town vs Liverpool - All build up and reactions here

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

It was a really good game to watch - am gutted that I didn't go. The neutrals will have had a field day with that. All credit to Luton who would have been full value for a win after about 50-60 mins.

We were pretty dreadful all first half apart from the goal and a nice bit of one touch play that didn't come off around the same time. Again in the second half we were poor for 15-20 minutes, but after Pongolle came on it was one-way traffic.

Alonso's first looked awesome, but was actually a fluke - it ballooned up off a defender's ankle just after he hit it. Aside from his goals, Alonso had a very poor game - his passing was often wayward, and he put us in trouble on more than one occasion.

Cisse was poor - the penalty summed him up for me. Sami was poor, Carra was poor, Crouch was almost anonymous, Sissoko was diving all over the place first half and deserved to be subbed. Finnan was skinned almost at will for an hour, Riise was skinned on the right for most of the first half, Carson was unconvincing first half but calmed down in the second half (he was unfortunate for the penalty).

Riise for me was the best of our back four, but even so was only about 5/10, mainly for his work going forward in the second half, which says it all really.

To be honest, only Kewell, Gerrard and - in particular - Pongolle emerged with any real credit. We only started playing when Pongolle came on, and I think Cisse should be very concerned about how the pecking order is starting to look. Sinama's played himself into a starting place for me.

All the same, a very good match. Yeah, the team deserve the mother of all b*llockings for getting themselves into a hairy situation, but if today's game helps to re-emphasise the importance of the FA Cup to football fans all over the country, it'll be a poor performance for the greater good of the game.

Listening to some of the comments on here today you would think we were on the verge of relagation!

Fair comment we were well off our best today for half the game, but its not the fkn drama some are making it out to be,
The cup always throws up games like these, for me it was a pleasure to watch in the end,I backed us at 6/4 at H/T  :D

It proves Rafa is on the ball by strengthening the back line, Sami needs resting to keep him at his best and so does Carra for that matter.
for me a cracking cup tie full of passion and loads of twists and turns, you have to expect the opposition to be well up for cup games as well as ourselves
We know we need more strength in dept so lets see what the next 3 weeks bring

Its no good for the heart following L.F.C...methinks i need to lie down in a dark room after all that excitement!.....and agony they put us through. We defo need a new CB and i cant understand the awful preformences from carra and finnan tonight? they were made to look ordinary and seem to buckle under any sort of pressure tonight? what a shambles in the first half but all credit to rafa for making those changes. :bowdown

Your post was good bu call on Upson? And do what, conced more goals? Upson is a joke of a defender, I've never seen anyone make so many mistakes consistantly. Overrated player that is average at best.

Im sorry i never meant to wrote Upson. I meant "call upon"

However, we need to take into account, that a team that was in the third division (using old terms) of the English leagues last year was playing the EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS, so they would have been more than up for it.
For some of those guys it will have been the biggest games of their lives to date, and may even be the biggest game they ever play in. Also the simple matter that this was the F.A Cup, and though not as important in the grand scale of things as it used to be, it does still have that magic about it, that make such games happen, year in, year out.

The negatives are all to apparent, so dont think I need to touch those, but in terms of positives, the resilience and fight we showed was excellent. The Liverpool of a year ago today, would not have had the self belief that we could come back, and we would be out.
But that night of 25th May 2005, did more for us than bring home the trophy for keeps. It also gave the players the belief that WE CAN come back when behind in games, and we do have the quality to do so.
Much in the same way we came back at the Reebok last weekend, a year ago we would have lost that match too.

At least we are through and still the possibilty of another Cup along with the possibility of still winning the Champions League again (though defending of today will be puished sverely by 'better' teams!).

We went what 9 or 10 games without conceding a goal, and playing against Chelsea,Betis,etc... Even Boro and Newcastle had players who were capable of scoring goals but we didn't let them.

What it's important is that we correct our mistakes, in the past few games we haven't done that. We made mistakes against Everton and conceded a goal. We did it against Bolton and now today. We can't keep doing this if we want seriously to push up in the table.

We made it far too difficult than it should had been, but it was entertaining non the less.

the fact is those sides couldnt put moves together like luton did, if the goal the lad robinson scored was slotted in by van basten or someone everyone would be raving about it, carragher had no chance because the lads first touch was so good it didnt give jamie a chance.
even the first goal, once the lad went round carson he put the ball in the only place the covering player (finnan i think) couldnt get it.
luton played well.

Completely agree. Their interplay was superb on a poor pitch, far better than hours for 70 minutes until they tired and our class showed. Fair play to them, against a lesser team, and if our finishing wasn't so good they could have got a result.

I thought watching Cisse today was interesting. Im fairly sure now that he doesn't have the ability or physicality to be a top player in England. However, he never gave up or stopped trying throughout the match.

it just looked to me as if no research was done on Luton and it took Rafa 45mins to work them out, all today showed to me is that he still has not got the hang of the FA.CUP but at least it made for one hell of a good game.

A.B its a one in a lifetime game for most these Luton players, it not a Fu*king league fixture, the adraniline will have carried the Luton players for the 1st half, they gave it everything, give them some f*cking credit mate, Luton played well and we were pathetic at times in the 1st time and gave the ball away to much, remember they are a championship side and we have been beat by Burnley and Palace who grace the same league and in both games when falling behind, we never looked like winning.

But tonight was difference, OK it wasnt what we expected but we are through and we showed bottle.

In all honesty i think this was to prove to the tw*t of a Chelsea manager that there is just a bit more to liverpool than defending  :D

Oh and heres Gerrards goal

I dont think Rafa expected a cup tie against a lower division would be so tough. I was watching Copa Del Rey highlights yesterday and non of those ties had the exitment or passion of this one.
