Rafa puts pressure on board

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

From SkySports website

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has called on the club's board to give him the backing he needs in the transfer market.

Benitez has already been wheeling and dealing in the January transfer market having brought in Jan Kromkamp and Paul Anderson while letting Josemi and John Welsh leave.

The Spaniard is determined to continue his reshaping of the Anfield squad and is hoping to push through a deal for Danish international Daniel Agger.

Reports suggest Liverpool have tabled a bid for the Brondby defender and are looking to clinch his signature in the next week.

Benitez, referring to the Spanish custom of exchanging presents on King's Day, which is on Friday, is hoping that Liverpool officials with now support him with more funds to bolster his squad with further signings.

"What I would like for King's Day is for my bosses to behave in exactly the same respectful manner towards me that they have been doing so far," said Benitez.

"But what I also would like to see is an extra effort to get what I need to improve the team."

Unusual for Rafa to put pressure on the board dya think?

yeah i think you're right.  Rafa has a great relationship with the board and if he really needed money, they would make it available.  However, Rafa isn't that sort of manager who would demand 20 million for 1 player.

This is just the papers trying to have a knock at us as theyve run out of things to write with Stevie staying and Crouch scoring and Cisse sayinbg hes going nowhere. The story could have been wr titles "Keep up te good work" but they turn it against us to cause friction. Typical journos. I should know beacsue thats my line.

Typical Skysports. I think Benitez was actually singing the boards praises but Skysports made it sound like a criticism.

Krompanp and Anderson have already arrived and Agger looks imminent. There is also strong talk of Simao.

I think the board have always backed Benitez as best they can. I remember a story that Rick Parry wanted Benitez to sign Edgar Davids in 2004, Rafa said no and Parry and Moores have put no further pressure on Rafa to sign players. And as we can see by Rafa's signings, they are Benitez signings, not Moores/Parry signings.

Liverpool have backed Benitez as best they can with the resources available. I think Benitez was praising that, not knocking them.

The title "Rafa puts pressure on board" wasn't the heading in SkySports to tell the truth, it was "Rafa wants backing"

Well, I've seen countless of times in the past that a paper can quote a player or manager correctly but leave out stuff which puts those comments in context.

Skysports aren't the worst, in fairness, but they do come up with misleading titles.

Bullocks of a story, Rafa dismisses it

There will be more new players, with Benitez dismissing suggestions he is unhappy with the financial backing he is receiving at Anfield.

“Always you want more money but I am more than happy with the support from the board, chairman and chief executive,” he said.

I would attempt to think that Rafa wants more funds to buy players without having to "sell off" his own, to fund possible transfers. It may sound simple, but I remember the last transfer period this was a main theme that was being sung out of Anfield, that in order to purchase a transfer or two, Rafa would have to sell the likes of Cisse etc. This comment that Rafa made (taken well out of context by Skysports) would have been done so that he wouldn't have to resort to selling his players, and thus reducing team numbers.
