Things you remember from 2005

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Ciggy » Fri Dec 23, 2005 7:13 am

This year has flown by, and seen as its coming to the end of the year, what things stick out in your mind, maybe an article a video clip etc etc for me these two are on top of my list.

The 96 were watching as we walked out in Istanbul
And Shanks and Bob and Emlyn, they were looking down as well
It seemed to be all over when Milan scored their three goals
But someone else was watching and that man was a Pole.

So the folks up there in heaven were a little bit surprised
When Pope John Paul the second appeared right before their eyes
He smiled at Shanks and Bob and Em knelt down and said some prayers
Then turned back towards the lads and said "I just spoke to Him upstairs

He can't do much that's obvious, but he'll see what he can do
He thinks it might be better if you played a 3-5-2
He saw the team was struggling, and that Finnan needed a rest
But don't you worry lads 'cause now the 'keepers gloves are blessed

You see - the lad in nets is one of mine So I put in a request
"I know I lived in Italy, down in the Vatican
But I can't quite bring myself to be shouting for Milan
So the words gone down to Rafa, to do the best he can
He whispered very quietly he'd do better with Hamman

He's says you'll be alright from now The game it isn't dead
And things will soon get better if young Steve uses his head
It was Vladi's birthday yesterday and the man owes him some luck
He'll even do the decent thing and make Milan Baros duck

We owe Xavi a big favour because of the broken leg
But he'll need to chase the follow up and score with his left peg
And then just to make it interesting He's ordered extra time
And we'll see how good them gloves are when Dudek saves it off the line.

We've done everything we can to make sure the ball stays out.
But we cannot interfere with the penalty shoot-out.
So Shanks, Bob, Emlyn and good ol' Pope Johnny Paul
Watched the match in wonder and cheered on every goal

And full time went to extra time with the fans nervously sick
And they waited until the time came for Serginho's first spot kick
Serghino he missed the goal, and Pirlo's shot was saved
But Didi and Lord Frodsham proved their nerves were not so frayed

Then Thomason put one in, but Riise missed his shot
Then Kaka scored, and Smicer scored, the atmosphere was red hot
And then almost in slow motion it was time for Shevchenko's chance
But Dudek had different ideas and did a little dance

Then waited for a second as the ball came flying in
Dived to the right and parried it to save it for the win
And as they down on all the fans and scenes of wild abandon
Em turned to old Pope Johnny Paul and put his arm around him

And said "That was unbelievable, the best game without doubt -
But I thought you said you wouldn't help with the penalty shoot out?"
John Paul looked up and smiled and said "Look son, it wasn't me"
And I wouldn't doubt the word of God in truth and honesty

So Emlyn he was puzzled as the crowd was going wild
But in the corner, on their cloud,
Shanks and Paisley sat and smiled.
The moral of the story is that money can't buy success
And neither can a constant whinge to people in the press

And writing a team off when the clock reaches half time
Might just result in something coming out of the divine
Because Shanks and Paisley knew, as the cup was coming home
God wears the red of Liverpool and we'll NEVER WALK ALONE!!!

:bowdown  :bowdown  this is my favourite.

Alan Greens article on Everton, so true now look whats happened.

Wake up and smell the coffee, David!

By Alan Green 18 August 2005.
ALL SUPPORTERS love to dream of success, particularly at the dawn of a new season, and the media generally loves to feed those dreams.

That's why you see headlines such as "We Are The New Invincibles" over arrogant ramblings by John Terry and read claims from Gary Neville that Manchester United can go through the campaign unbeaten. The players should know better.

But nowhere is in more need of a hearty dose of reality than Everton Football Club. No sooner had they finished 4th in May, principally due to a wretched league season from Liverpool, than David Moyes was pronouncing his team the "New Kings of Merseyside."

You'd have thought such delusions wouldn't last beyond a certain night in Istanbul, but no.

Amidst many ludicrous statements pre-season (see also Peter Kenyon's "small group of one"), I thought that of Moyes topped the lot "our target is to finish higher than last season."

I think he should see a doctor.

And then I read the programme for Everton's opening fixture against Manchester United. It advertised "superb Everton v Villarreal t-shirts (with Everton in Europe logo and map on the back). We have some left in stock and they are a 'must wear' item for supporters on the night of the 2nd leg, wherever you are in the world."

I wouldn't rush to buy one at £8.99; they'll be on sale at a fraction of that price in just over a week's time.

They talk big at Everton; the truth is harsher. All summer, there have been boasts of how much they have to spend, the players they're after and who wants to go to Goodison. I even saw James Beattie interviewed about how 'new signing' Milan Baros would fit in alongside him.

Sorry, have I missed something? Instead, the reality is that Everton have bought Per Kroldrup, a defender I hadn't heard of, and two players clearly discarded by their clubs, Simon Davies and Phil Neville.

Isn't it so that no one really wanted to join a team who'd performed beyond their wildest dreams for one season and are now likely to drop back where they'd come from? Not even Craig Bellamy who changed his mind after talking to the manager. Nice one, Dave.

Moyes should be dampening expectations, not feeding them. He should be relieved that he managed to persuade his best players, Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta to stay on.

He should be telling supporters to think of a top 10 finish at best, not speaking of third place or better.

Everton supporters can dream but they're not fools. Moyes says his team didn't get what they deserved against Villarreal. Most everyone else knows better. The Spanish side controlled the game without having to exert themselves. It will require a miracle to reach the group stages.

You see, their eyes were so dazzled by the headlights they failed to comprehend they hadn't actually qualified for the Champions League, only for a qualifying round.

And Manchester United, apart from one superb save by Edwin Van Der Sar, were in easy command of Saturday's game.

Most dishearteningly for advocates of the so-called 'School of Science', when Everton failed to trouble Fergie's men they quickly resorted to their standard 'Plan B', bring on Duncan Ferguson and lump the ball forward. Inevitably, it failed.

Evertonians may dream on but trust me; normal service has resumed at Goodison Park.

And some famous Rafa Quotes.

Talk to Carra if you can understand him, you can understand anyone: Rafa to Morientes up on arrival :D

"This is Anfield, they say you'll never walk alone... it's true!"

"It's easier if you've got the money to go into the transfer market. Imagine if you want to buy a jacket, if you have £1000 you can buy a good jacket, but if you have £10,000 you can buy the best"

And asked about this quotes and the many different jackets he wears - in an interview in LFC mag he said.

" I am very bad with the clothes, my wife says 'Ok, I need to change your jackets from Spain because in England its different'. She has bought a lot of jackets".

"I asked for a sofa and they brought me a lamp" When he left Valencia :D

''I know to be manager of Liverpool Football Club is very important. There are a lot of people who respect us. It is a privilege for me to be here." And its a privilege to have you here Rafa :bowdown

"He is a good manager, yes, but he will lose tomorrow"
The night before we played Chelsea in the 2nd leg at Anfield Ha.

"My secretary, Sheila, was right in line with the shot and she says it was a goal. That's good enough for me."

"Now my relationship with Steven is good- with my wife it is better"

"I am very happy here for sure, my family is very happy here too, we are settled very well. my youngest daughter speaks alot of english now, more so even than spanish, and she speaks with scouse accent so I cannot understand her (beaming smile) but she also speaks alot of spanish, or sometimes even gets mixed up and speaks alot of spanglish" :D

"My wife said we will win the Champion League, she predicts and she wants a new watch, she has many watches"

And finally after the final to the journo:

" We had been talking in the half time, we need to do something, we need to change things and maybe we a score things would be different and we a scored and it was different"

Certainly was Rafa it certainly was.

on a personal level i had a great year, however the sense of pride i felt at winning the european cup again overshadowed everything for the year, it wasnt just the winning, but it was also the way that we did it in a fashion that will be remembered for ever and not just by liverpool supporters

the unbelievable joy of winning the 5th european cup in such an epic style followed all too quickly by the despair when it looked like stevie g was on his way out the door. what a weird weird few weeks that was. but the best thing about 2005 is leaving it behind to head into 2006 knowing that the team, the squad and the club is stronger and better than it has been for a long long time. bring it on.

The thing that sticks with me the most after all the emotional times our great team has given me this year is probably a bit of an unusual one. It was my normally quite guarded emotions completely getting the better of me while watching (I think his name is Pete Wylie) the lead singer of the Mighty Wah singing "the story of Emlyn Hughes" outside the Attaturk before the game. I just looked at the sea of red around me, looked at my mates, and in that moment it was proved to me beyond any doubt that we are, without exception, the greatest set of fans on the planet. At that point I preceded to cry like a baby. Not one of my mates took the p1ss, I think they all kinda knew what I was feeling.

Thanks Reds!! :buttrock

Take a bow Alan Green on the 5 most sensible quotes of the year  :bowdown  :D

For me the Juventus game and Chelsea at home, Youll never walk alone at the end of the semi.

Being so bitter and wound up about not being able to go to Istanbul, getting even more wound up when i found out my mate who doesnt even go the match had a ticket, i was bitter and p!ssed off right up until the 25th when i knew he was there......Only once id started drinking and singing in town before the game did the feeling go away.

40th minute bladdered in the barracuda and throwin a bottle of stella at the ground hitting me mate, i was fuming, half time came and i sat out side on the kurb p!ssed and gutted, id waited my life for this and at half time all i was thinking was "this is embarrasing "its gonna be 6" "is there any point weatching the inevivitable". 15 minutes later i pick me self up only to be told i couldnt go back in, blagged the bouncer i was on me phone and he let me in, even though i wondered what was the point.

1st 10 minutes it was more of the same, all milan my head was on a post totally dejected........then out of nothing a cross, all be it to gerrard 12 yards out whos heading ability is not well known, who puts it in off the post, not quite panadomonium but the doom and gloom was lifted, a little bit of belief bt not much, by the time i stopped celebrating BANG, smicer from 20 yards, IS THIS HAPPENING?? The pure emotion i felt after that goal could only be compared to...well nothing, id never felt it watching football, the owen final, olympiakos, Roma, the 2 wins against newcastle, chelsea semi nothing this was a new feeling.

After that well you dont need me to tell you but that night Liverpool FC put my body through things it had never been through before, some i wish to never feel again, but some will live with me forever and id love to be able to have that feeling of joy, happiness, the things that make you take your top off swing it round your head even though your a chubby pasty ba$tard!!

I feel so lucky to have been a liverpool supporter that night and only we will be able to tell people what feelings where really felt that night.

And the 26th was the most wonderful icing on the greatest ever cake of football ever seen. A million people on the streets to see the home coming and meeting Colin Murray of Radio one fame there who had just got back from Istanbul, that man is legend as well, but he was in a bit of a rough state, But hey who the F*ck wasnt!!!!!!!!!!!!

YNWA

Lets hope 2006 brings us some more magical moments as well!!

Just 1 great moment i forgot to point out as well, Kirkland clearing up field, me mate dave saying hes gonna blow the whistle now lets go, heading for the exit when the ball drops to Mellor 30 yards out and he smashes a volley as good as any in the bottom corner to break the gooners hearts, i could go on all day, with olympiakos, IGORs goal v fulham and hes 2 assists 1 against leverkusen and his outstanding performance V depor away, good on you IGOR IGOR, oh and his winner v Bolton, he F*ckin deserved that goal more than anyone.

And of course lets hope the New Year brings Justice for Michael Shields.

YNWA

And i cant be ar$ed doin a spell check u can just put up with my sh!te spelling  :D
