King ready to sign new Tottenham contract

Tottenham captain Ledley King would be happy to pledge his long-term future to the club, with things 'going in the right direction'.

The England defender headed his side into the lead during Saturday's north London derby against Arsenal at White Hart Lane, and again drew much praise for his solid display.

King, 24, is contracted to Spurs until 2008 - a deal which he agreed only last summer.

However, after a string of impressive displays for both club and country - including as a holding midfielder for England in the crucial World Cup qualifier against Poland at the start of October - the Spurs skipper looks set for a lucrative new offer.

His advisors are currently in negotiations over improved terms, reported to be in the region of £50,000-a-week which would bring King in line with Spurs' other top earners, such as Edgar Davids.

King is happy to let those discussions continue while he maintains his focus on keeping up the standards which have helped lift Martin Jol's men up to third in the Premiership.

'It's between my agent and the club. I am just letting them get on with it and concentrating on my football,' the Spurs defender commented.

'I've always said that if we are going in the right direction, I haven't got a problem.'

King added in the London Evening Standard: 'The lads have given us an indication of what we are capable of. We have a young squad and we have to keep going.

'The Champions League would be a bonus - you take it one game at a time and see where we can get.'

Tottenham, meanwhile, could now hand a life-time ban to the supporter who directed a tirade of foul-mouthed abuse towards Arsenal defender Sol Campbell - once a White Hart Lane favourite - as he left the pitch after the game.

Centre-back Campbell, who controversially left for Highbury during 2001, was involved in a clash with Teemu Tainio as the pair jumped for a high ball, catching the Finn with his arm and leaving the Spurs midfielder - who claimed he had been deliberately elbowed - needing stitches in a head wound.

Tottenham have identified the person responsible for the incident, which Campbell was happy to leave in the hands of Spurs after being consulted by the police and club officials.

And Spurs director of communications Donna Cullen commented: 'The supporter was spoken to and he said he had never done anything like that before.

'The matter will be dealt with in the appropriate manner. Under club policy, he is likely be banned indefinitely.'

Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was struck by a conker thrown from the crowd midway through the second half on Saturday. The incident is continuing to be investigated.
