I think Rafa is failing in the premiership and his purchases have been poor (with the odd exception).

However, I've always said a manager needs 3 seasons before people can judge him and he is not half way through that yet.

The problem, as I see it, is the success of Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho, but particularly Wenger.

Mourihno won the league in his first season, but inherited a very good team and had a bottomless pit of money.

Wenger is the real problem. He won the league in his first full season. His first purchases were excellent and everything came into place all at once. People look at Arsenal appointing Wenger in 1996 and say "Why can't Liverpool do the same?"

Wenger and Arsenal was a bit of a freak. Wenger's first signings were astonishingly successful. He was incredibly lucky. Since then Wenger's signings have been as mixed as any manager's. Wenger was also fortunate in that he inherited Denis Bergkamp but also the famous Arsenal back 5. Thats more than half a great team.

Rafa probably inherited the same amount of great players but they were spread out among the side. Wenger was lucky in that his whole defensive unit was already in place. All he really had to do was revamp the attacking and creative side of the team (ok, in fairness, no easy task). In contrast, Rafa has had problems with all aspects of the side.

Other great managers in modern times (er.......you're probably only looking at Ferguson) have need far longer to mould a side.

Rafa's situation now and Ferguson's situation when he took over are similar. Both inherited a few good players, a lot of underachievers and fat cats, and a few downright dodgy ones. It took Ferguson a long time to sort it out, and sorting Liverpool out will also take a long time.

Agreed JBG - it's going to take another 18months - 2 years to get the team in a position where it can challenge.
