Cassano for free?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

MILAN, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Italy striker Antonio Cassano's troubled relationship with AS Roma touched new depths on Thursday when the club's general manager called him a liar.

Cassano ended his silence over his contract dispute with Roma on Tuesday when he said that he had been willing to compromise over a new deal.

But he also said the club were forcing him out and 'making a fool' of him.

'He is a liar and our lawyers are evaluating his comments,' said Rosella Sensi, Roma's general manager and daughter of owner Franco Sensi in comments reported by Italian media.

'I've said before that the Cassano issue is closed. I am not speaking anymore with someone who is incoherent....he is the one who is making fools of the club and the fans'.

Cassano, one of Italy's brightest young talents, could leave Roma on a free transfer in June when his contract runs out but it looks increasingly likely that he will be sold during the transfer window in January.

A mid-season move would allow Cassano to get regular football in time to make a push for a return to the Italy side before the World Cup finals in Germany and would also enable Roma to claim a transfer fee.

Cassano had said that he had twice made concessions over his salary but that Roma were not prepared to compromise. Sensi said that had not been the case.

'It is not true that he made two steps back. He has never done that and in fact we made a step forward in the negotations, so he really can't be alllowed to come out with certain things. We have been very patient but he undervalued the importance of our offer,' she said.

'Cassano has had all the time that he wanted and his response is only lies.'

Italy coach Marcello Lippi has made it clear that he views Cassano as a potentially key weapon in his side's bid for the World Cup next year but he has not called up the Bari-born forward for this season's qualifiers.

A combination of injuries and the long-running contract dispute have limited him to just two appearances in Serie A so far this season.

If Roma gonna release him, do you think we should move in for him?

Exceptional talent, sublime technique, BUT he has seriously got some issues and is always causing a storm, whether it be with the media, fellow players and as can be seen from above also the board!

Way too much baggage IMO for us, and the media would love him around as he is likely to give them plenty to write about.
In all honesty I would love to see him here (as replacement for Garcia!) but as I say, just too much trouble me thinks!!  And Rafa doesnt seem the type to get this type of player to do well, such as Fergie did with Cantona etc;

Would bring great talent, but also the chance of bringing great problems.

totally agree,he could potentially be one of the greatest players in the world, but he is a sandwich short of a picnic and has a temprement to make rooney look like a angel, rafa won,t sign anyone like that,he does not have the mentality to play for rafa,it is s hame because he is class when he is in the mood

Agreed - amazing talent - but would definitely have an unsettling/disruptive effect on the team.

maybe he will change coz he came to new country, new environment and different culture. maybe he will be more mature, coz he want to prove his worth and feed his ego that he can survive whereever he go....any manager or any club must take a risk when sign a palyer. do you think that wenger know henry will score 25 goals per season for arsenal? he don't.

Do you have any particular reason as to WHY, 'It will be good if Liverpool sign Cassano'?

Cos he'll cook pizza for the lads, and walk around in a white chef's hat shouting "Mama-mia!!!". The comedy value alonewould make the transfer worthwhile. :;):
