New defender - Who would you like rafa to sign in jan.

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Seeing as Rafa decided to "rest" sami against Blackburn and use dodgy DJIMI instead it is quite clear that in January we need to sign a new defender. Even if sami does manage to keep injury and suspension free throughout the season he is clearly losing his pace and ability to play game after game. With all of these factors in mind who should Rafa be realisticly looking at to bring in during the next transfer window?

In the Sunday press according to the BBC website we are again being linked with J Woodgate at Real M. As good a defender as he is I fear us making a move for him would undoubtedly be a big mistake. There are always going to be questions about his fitness and anyone who saw his debut will also be wondering just whether or not he has lost a lot of his ability during his long lay-off.

I personally think looking at somebody like Anton Ferdinand may be the way to go, he is young and the supposed people in the know seem to think that he is going to be a much better player than his dosey arsed brother.

I would like to see andrade he is a quality defender and scores the odd goal as well. But it will come down to funds once again, anton ferdinand would be a good prospect but west ham will prob still ask for the 10 to12m mark. They won't let him leave cheap. Woodgate for 6m would be a good and cheaper option, as long as he gets back to somewhere near his best.woodgate and carragher at the back would be an ideal partnership.

I

I think this is another non story TBH, it is Sunday after all, but anyway.............

You cant 'lose' ability. 'Ability' is a natural thing that is honed through the youth years, so cannot be lost.
Form, Confidence and Fitness can all be lost, and if any of these are lost, it will have an affect on somebodys performance, but they will still have the same 'ability' as they initially had, but it wont show (and may look like lose of ability) if all or any of the above is lost.
Woodgate has probably, not got two of the above and is only nearly back to full fitness........hence the reason he looks as if he has no/less ability.
Believe you me, Woodgates abilty is defo still there, but it is the injury problems that you have to look at if considering him as a purchase!!

Good shout on A.Ferdinand btw Rushie, I think he has a HEAP of 'abilty' and it is just about to flourish, we need to get in there before it does and his fee rockets.
Very young, and could be a stalwart in our defence for years to come.

By the looks of the BBC gossip collumn Woodgate is being linked with every man and his dog at the moment. When fit he has everything you could want from a central defender. He's good in the air, has pace, reads the game and is VERY composed on the ball. If he were to become available we would be crazy to take him on anything other than a loan/pay as you play deal.

Agree that Ferdinand could be a good shout but i doubt Pardew would let the lad go for anything other than silly money during mid-season. I think it's more likely that Rafa will go back to La Liga for a player we (the fans) don't know so well. Anything would give me more confidence than Djimi or Josemi.

I have always been a big fan of Christian Chivu. Anyone know where he plays these days? (it was Roma last i heard)

Yeah, I've just had a look on the net and he is still at Roma. I remember that he was one of the brightest defending talents in europe whilst at Ajax but he seems to have disappeared off the map a bit since going to roma; I can't remember if it was him or Mexes that was having a really bad time of it over there though. Obviously if he is having a bad time of it we may have a chance of getting him on the cheap but getting a player lacking in confidence is something we don't really want in such an important position.
Also can anyone remember Whether or not roma are one of the many clubs that are struggling financially over there; I don't really follow tje italian footbal as it tends to be a bit boring.

Roma are in heaps of debt.  They sold a couple of players at the end of last season (though I can't remember who they are).  They're in serious financial trouble.

I think we should try and bring in Nelson, the Kiwi centre half from Blackburn.  He's single-handedly transformed Blackburn's defence since they brought him in last January.  They used to be a real soft touch at the back, but this guy has brought a lot of organisation to their back line, they're tough to break down as we found out yesterday.

I think he's about 27, if Liverpool came calling I'm sure he'd want to sign, he wouldn't turn us down at this stage of his career.  Doubt he'd cost as much as the other candidates from the premiership such as Anton Ferdinand and Upson.

We were linked with Ibanez so maybe we'll go for him. Andrade wouldn't be bad either but he has a big buy out clause.

Ledley king would be my top choice but i doubt he would leave tottenham at the moment and would probabley cost at least 15 mill. Chivu would be a good prospect as Roma are in debt and shouldnt be too expensive.
Woodgate depending on price.
For a dream purchase which probabley wouldnt happen, but how about Lucio?
