To play to the whistle or not - Is it ethical

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Apparently before the Everton,Bucharest game Moyes went into the referees dressing room,to voice his concerns about Bucharest time wasting and feigning injury. He then insructed his players not to kick the ball into touch if an opponent was down injured.

This is not a post slagging Everton there are other threads for that.Iwas just wondering what your thoughts are on this matter.I can understand Moyes being concerned, but to visit the refferees dressing room is sureley putting added pressure on a ref.I realise the position Everton were in,and the manager, any manager will try anything to give his team an advantage but is it ethical.

As far as playing on when an opponent is down I have mixed views. One of the first things you are taught when playing football is "Play to the whistle".It is a fairly new thing to kick the ball into touch. It can be so frustrating to see a team kick the ball out of play and the injured player make a miraculous recovery, but there is always the chance a player could be seriously injured.

I remember a few seasons ago Paulo de Canio, electing to catch a ball rather than play on in a possible goal scoring position, when a goalkeeper was injured. It seems ironic it was against Everton at Goodison Park.

good post red baron...i certainly think the spirit of the game could well be jeopardised by such tactics.. however that was NOT the case for moyes and co. when arteta was pole-axed!
(and rightly so)
tell you what it did do aside from the foul on him..
it showed the opposition little if any credence... ok 3 or 4 times the 'injured' player soon got back up, but how could you justify playing to the whistle while a player (from any side) was on the deck with what can only be 'suspected' at that point.a serious injury to his central nervous system....you cant say  "pah! get up yer cheatin' :censored:" EVERY time?

i must say though beside the point here, that french referee certainly seemed to be going along with anything moyes wanted...... ???  one of uefa's bright prospects? i f.ucking hope not!!

If a player goes down injured i think the game should continue and the ref should make the decision to stop play if he feels that it's needed!
There's too much acting and bluffing going in in foootball!
Players go down for a rest ffs or in some cases time wasting or to break up the other teams attacking momentum!
Cheating its called! :nod

I was thinking about this the other night too, I watched the Everton game on TV and the commentator pointed out that Moyes visited the Ref's dressing room. That in my opinion is a big no go, manager's or any backroom staff shouldn't be allowed to do that, it can put unecessary pressure on the referee and could ultimately influence that game, so that is a no for me.

As for putting the ball out, I agree with Barry on this one, the ref should make the decision to stop play. From a manager's point of view I think Moyes tactic's to play on where spot on, I lost count of how many player's had went down rolling the turf like a sniper had made a shot at him, when they realised Everton where playing on the got straight up and run freely. The only time their time wasting - feigning injury worked was when the ref had blew for a free kick which then enabled them to play act as play had stopped anyway. So for that part of my opinion, yes I think team's should play on until the ref has stopped play, unless the player is genuinly hurt and the other player's know it.

Moyes and Everton make me laugh.  It is ALWAYS someone elses fault!  If it isn't us then it's the Ref or some 'cheating' players. Moyes is just trying to distract people from the fact that HIS TEAM are to blame for going out of Europe because they arn't good enough.  No amount of bitching will change that.

In england this isn't a problem, i'm quite happy for them to kick the ball out of player. However in european football i would do exactly the same as Moyes.

Hats off to him for having the balls to do it. It happened about 4 or 5 times the other night where Everton players played on and the Bucharest players jumped straight back up.

Its a disgrace and the referees should be instructed to book players they feel are feigning injury. I'm off the attitude that if someone's going to go down, give them something to go down for.

Haha, I actually watched the match hoping for a good thrashing, but I didn't get what I had hoped for! Instead I seen that c*nt Duncan Ferguson get away with relentless elbow attack's. I watched the match with my dad ( support's Liverpool but never really watches the game's as he's always busy ) who had never seen Everton play, he turned at looked at me and said "they are sh*te arn't they", I was rolled over laughing because I thought Everton where actually not doing too bad.

I agree wholeheartedly with the last bit of your  post Stu, book the f*cker's and it will soon stop.

Bolton used the same tactic in their first leg of the EUFA cup the other week, they actually scored from it because they kept the ball in play. I think a defender was about to put the ball out of play and Nolan said no chance and played on. Fair play to them.

I've noticed us stopping the "play to the whistle thing f the players think he is faking it"  but thats noly been once or twice, so I think that we should play to the whistle unless it's apparent that the player is indeed injured.
