Even General John de Chastelain is not 100% sure all the weapons were handed in!

Only God and P ONeill knows the answer to that question.The real question is if Sinn Fein and the PIRA are now committed to entirely peaceful means.Adams and McGuinness convince me but im not entirely convinced by the DUP.They seem to me a one issue party who dont seem able to accept peace.

The arms issue and decommissioning is a moot point. Even if the IRA handed in every single weapon they could go out and buy more weapons tomorrow.

I believe the IRA have handed in pretty much the entire haul, bar a few handguns a few members would have held back for "personal use". The IRA have been hindering the Republican movement for years, they knew they couldn't win the war with the British goverment, so now they are trying another approach.

I have no time for the IRA and Sinn Fein, but Loyalists need the IRA more than Republicans do. Loyalists could always point to the IRA boogie man, now that its going the way of the dinousaur some Loyalists and Unionist policitians are getting worried, as they will be shown up for the negative biggots that they are. There is some terrible poverty and lack of education and jobs amongst the Unionist community, and that is something Unionist policitians should be addressing, not getting on their soap box about a few hand guns and bullets.

Anyway, Loyalist paramilitaries refuse to decommission until they have finished their bloody turf war. Shouldn't people be more worried about that?

Northern ireland is a messed up place. I'm from the Republic and I think the unionists up there probably assume I want a united Ireland - I don't. Economically and security wise it is not worth the effort.

Anyway, the problems of the war up there can be shared among both sides, and the government of Uk and Ireland, and people of both too.

I am not being funny but Barry what do the unionist people want the IRA to do, I mean they aren't a defeated army so won't do anything humiliating to them or their supporters.

I think most people would love it if the loyalist paramilitary forces destroyed all their weapon infront of clergy and international commissions and renounced all violence. Then the army could leave and take their guns too.

Surely it is a great moment and hope is nothing to fear.

Note to all in NI, this is not supposed to antagonise but is honestly querying.

I agree with that Niall.

I'm also from the Republic. Almost all Irish people have a romantic notion of a united Ireland, but if you were to ask most people on the streets of Dublin, Cork or Galway whether they were really in favour of a united Ireland, most people would struggle to answer, as deep down many people are happy with things in the south and don't want to upset the status quo. Personally, I'm not that interested in living in a country where part of the population are desperately unhappy and don't want to be a part of it: a situation that would arise with Unionists should there be a united Ireland.

Irish people gave up Articles 2 and 3 of their consitution which shows that they are not interested in coercing Unionists to join up with the south.

Its also a misconception among unionists that Northern Republicans want to be ruled by Dublin. Many don't. Many northern republicans want a united Ireland but with a regional assembly.

I hate the IRA and utterly distrust Sinn Fein, but hating them forever won't achieve anything. At the end of the day they represent a very large proportion of the North's population and Unionists can't ignore them forever.

I think a lot of Unionists need the IRA more than the Republicans do. Its a bit like Bush and Osama Bin Laden: you can always pull the wool over people's eyes and get them to forget the real issues by blaming their problems on the bogeyman. Unionist politicians have neglected the basic needs of their people for years by blaming all their problems on the IRA. If the IRA was to disappear, then many Unionist politicans will be exposed for the poor public servants that they are.
