Rafa has made serious mistakes in the league, he still is doing. So what? He's won the European cup, he's allowed to do what the he wants for the next few years, he's even making progress, not how i would do it, but you're a fickle gobs*i*e if you won't even give the man a chance.

LFC1 is spot on with that analysis. I had thought Chelsea wouldn't dominate the league as well as they did last year, but it's gone the other way, and the title is pretty much done & dusted (although, didn't we win the 1st ten games of the season in the 80's, and not win the league? not sure, maybe its the alzheimers). We have got a good chance of passing Man U and Arsenal, with the injury probs they've got at the moment. As for investment, I wonder whether its worth it, and maybe that's what our Boards, and Manu's & Arsenals think too. We've spent a net 10 mil this summer, Arsenal have spent less than they got in, Man U haven't spent as much as they normally do. Maybe they're all waiting for the Chelsea bubble to burst. Without their money, the whole transfer market will take a nosedive, and there's no point us getting dragged down by it, if there's no chance of winning the league anyway.

Which raises the question. If someone like Roman came along and offers to take over LFC, would you want it?

Someone with bottomless funds, funds which would be used effectively by Rafa. We would create a better team than Mourinho. And success is almost certain.

But that means the demise of the youth academy. A full squad of journeymen and mercenaries. An additional of an entire nation worth of glory-seeking supporters.

For me, I prefer doing it the traditional way. As Wenger said, Chelsea's success is not due to their natural potential. I prefer doing it the harder way, which would make success all the more sweeter.

And I would say no to anyone trying to buy the club of course.

in regards to your question GunGod, it's a definite no for me.

I'd hate for Liverpool to turn into Chelsea and accept the funds of a man which is quite probably a criminal. LFC doesn't tend to deal with people who have shady reputations (take Thaksin Shinawatra for example). For me selling out like Chelsea or Manure would go against everything the club stands for, and I'd rather be relegated than turn into some money-hungry PLC.

I agree and thats what made winning the European cup (and beating chelski along the way) all the more satisfying.

Lakes, although Stu is a bit full on there, your constant pessimism is a tad annoying. You have a right to criticise, sure, but you only ever have negative things to say - the only tiem you really post is when we have a bad result, when we win or Rafa does something good you hardly ever make comment.

I agree with almost everything you have said on your post. Youth academies, club structure, traditional footballing methods etc etc, would go a long way against every other team except Chelsea. Who knows what might happen to them in the future? If, Roman pulls out, then Mourhinio leaves, it will be like a pack of cards and the whole thing will just collapse. If or when that will ever happen, well your guess is as good as mine.

The only point I would disagree on is this; if we are all happy to settle for second place from now on, well that's fine. However, it will only be a matter of a few weeks before everyone is moaning again saying that we can't compete and we are struggling etc. The most saliant point is whether Rafa will be content playing second,third or fourth fiddle, year in, year out? Personally, I don't think so!

We all know that the current situation is not being played on a level playing field (no pun intended ) and the race for the title would be far more exciting without the Chelsea circus.

Your thoughts!

Good post mate, and for the record I wouldn't be content with playing second fiddle to Chelsea year in year out.

We still have a way to go, but I think in a few seasons Rafa can turn us into a side that can challenge Chelsea for the title, despite their stronger financial position. He has done similar with Valencia, competing against Barca and Real.

If Abramovich pulled out, the whole think would go pear shaped. They wouldn't be able to afford the wages of all the players, so there would be mass sellings, managerial resignations, the works. I don't think they’d turn into Leeds, but they'd no longer be a real force in the game.

But if Chelsea win the league at a canter for the net few seasons, I think the authorities in the game will step in and bring is some sort of wage capping system or something similar to try and make the playing field a little more level.

TBH I think we will see our title drought end with Rafa at the helm, we are constantly improving under him (perhaps somewhat slowly in the league, but improving all the same).
