First trip to anfield - Help a yank plan his pilgrimage

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby NCRedFan7 » Mon Sep 19, 2005 3:57 pm

I recently realized that I have the potential to maybe sneak in a trip to England sometime after the new year, and I couldn't think of a better way to spend my vacation days than maybe taking a four day weekend and going to a Liverpool game at Anfield.

However, I have many questions.  I'm an American from the South (yes, capitalized for a reason), and as such, I'm very unsure of the way to do a game at Anfield right.  I am familiar with British culture for the most part (I spent two months one summer studying at Oxford, even making it up to Liverpool for a day before going to Blackpool (yikes, trashiest place I've ever been.....but still lots of fun) to watch the British Open at Royal Lytham St. Anne's.  Didn't have the time to visit Anfield (still ticked about that).

Here's my question: if you, as a true native fan, could tell me, an American 'pool fan, everything he needs to know about going to a match, what would be your advice?

A few sample questions:

Attire?  Would jeans and a Riise jersey be sufficient?

Will I catch hell for being a Yank?

Are there any chants or songs I should know by heart (other than YNWA, which I already know)?

Best place to stay?

Best place to grab a pint and a bite?

Best way to ensure I don't get the everloving :censored: kicked outta me (granted, I'm a big guy (6'4", 205lbs), but I'm not into fighting when I can avoid it)?

Thanks for the help, guys.

Howdy Partner!

OK, well Im not a Liverpool Resident but here goes.

1. Attire for the match. Compulsary that you wear a pink jumper & yellow tartan check trousers (search Google for Rupert the Bear). No, only kidding Riise top & jeans is fine.

2. Nobody will give a flying fk that your American.

3. You'll pick some of the songs up as you go along. Chances are you wont get tickets for the Kop (where most of the singing goes on) so dont worry about it.

4. Any Travel Lodge (£50 a night ish)

5. Before the match get yourself into The Albert (next to the Ground). I go to Concert Square after the game but some locals on here probably know better than me.

6. dont want to get the sh!t kicked out of you? dont start mouthing off about being a yank and how much better your country is than sh!tty old England. Dont nick another fellas pint.

enjoy the day

NCRed the only advice I would offer is to get right behind the team, you'll pick up a few songs and chants during the game. If you do that then you'll be perfectly welcome at Anfield. Jeans and a 'pool shirt are spot on

Loads of bars in the city centre will do you just fine, as LeeJ says Concert Square is a good place to start. The pubs outside the ground (about 2 or 3 miles out of the city centre) are absolutely rammed before a match but you get a real working-class northern england pre-football atmosphere, absolutely brilliant and actually completely safe, you'll be amongst reds so no trouble whatsoever

Best places to stay are in town, try any of the following hotel chains (all about £50 a night): Travel Lodge, Dolby, Ibis, Travel Inn, Campanile, Holiday Inn Express

There's a good thread somewhere on RAWK all about visiting Liverpool, worth checking out for huge lists of hotels etc

Finally don't listen to a word Meelan#5 says, he's a knob

NCRedFan7 - When I travel over to game I usually stay in the Dolby Hotel (or next door in the Campanile) ... it's located down along the docks and a short walk from the centre of town. Warning though - It's cheap .... so don't be expecting 5* luxury. :p

As for a few drinks , the Beehive in the town centre is OK , and The Albert up at the ground.

I take it the NC in your name is North Carolina ? ... I have some cousins over there .. in Fayetteville and Virgina Beach ...

Yeah, the NC is for North Carolina.  I should be posting a pic for my signature soon to push the point home (if I can figure out how to do that, any help appreciated).

Fayetteville is where Ft. Bragg is located (home of one of the largest US Army / Paratrooper / Ranger bases is located).  As such, it has a very....interesting....atmosphere.  A few strips of bars, tattoo parlors, pawn shops and strip clubs, or so I hear.  Still a fun place to visit if you stay in the right places and don't :censored: of a soldier on leave...they're trained to kill, bored and drunk.  Not a good mix.

And for all the jokes that could have been made, I'm amazed that you chose to mock Fayetteville when "Virgina Beach" (mispelling of Virginia Beach, which is in Virginia, BTW) was an option (heheheh).
