While Houllier won the UEFA Cup against Alaves and the Worthington Cup against then 1st Division Birmingham. We got lucky against Arsenal in the FA Cup but did outplay the mancs last time out (only time in the last season or two)

REDTILLDEAD ... don't worry about that idiot ..it'll be past his bedtime soon !

4TH PLACE.. is this now the summit of our ambitions given
( 1 ) Our History
( 2 ) The millions we have spent
( 3 ) The players at our disposal
( 4 ) We finished 2nd in the league 2 years ago
( 5 ) Our manager talked about a 5 year plan about 5 years ago.

Given the above we should be challenging for top spot not top 4 !
The focus on the Champions League is allowing us to settle for second best ! Because the Premiership has more entrants in the Champions League it allows us to settle for 4th place and hail it as a successful season.
If , for example , UEFA give England another 2 places in the Champions League and allow a possible 6 entrants , would you call 6th place ( and CL qualification ) a success?

I think he might go if we finish 5th unless a new manager could persuade him the future was bright. I would hate it if we lost Mikey but he isn't ireplaceable.

at this moment 5th and a new man. at least that would give us more optimism for the future.

Cheers Scottbot ! :)

I'm not sure which way I stand on this one, there's a lot to think about:

1) Finishing 5th would almost certainly see the back of GH and that would be good news

BUT...

2) I want to see us in the CL and I want us to finish as high in the prem as possible

3) Missing out on CL means missing out on £millions

4) Is Owen more likely to go if no CL? (but maybe he's more likely to stay with a change of manager?)

5) No guarantee we'd get past the qualifiers

6) Even if we qualified for the proper stages we probably wouldn't get very far in the CL so we'd be sitting here this time next year out of CL with GH still in charge

I'm racking my brains but can't decide which scenaion I'd prefer. The scenario I want to see is the board axeing GH and us finishing 4th as well but I don't think that's gonna happen.

You aren't guaranteed CL football with 4th (or 3rd) spot. All you get is a shot at it.

For Premiership sides you are almost 75% there, but occasionally you could come up against a very competitive team in the qualifiers.

Newcastle are a topsey turvey team...I'm convinced the Pool would have beaten Partizan Belgrade.

I would hope we'd beat Partizan but then again I expected us to beat Celtic last season :(

IF we do qualify for the CL next season I am 99% certain we will definitely not be in contention for the Premiership. We have a hard enough time dealing with the UEFA Cup and other fixtures, that will just be too much. We need to have a squad capable of being Champions of England before we can even deal with being in the CL, for me that is why so many CL qualifying teams like Leeds, Newcastle and ourselves struggle so much

I'd definetely rather take CL, we need the money and to be recognized as one of the better clubs not a UEFA nobody team.

I think you have to ask yourself this question in answer to this debate. If we are equal on points with newcastle going into the last game against them, could you actaully sit there and go for newcastle? I know i couldn't!
