Petit and hassailbank?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby JBG » Tue Mar 30, 2004 4:42 pm

I asked people back in January whether we should sign Nicky Butt and Sylvian Wiltord on the cheap from Man UTD and Arsenal respectively, the idea being to add a bit of stability and experience to the side in the short term.

Most people laughed at the Wiltord idea, and there weren't many takers for Butt either.

Petit announced today that he is leaving Chelsea on a Bosman in the summer, and Hassailbank is also probably available.

What do people think about signing these players for Liverpool for a season or two?

Both are past their best, especially Petit, but they could add some experience and stability to us in vital areas of the pitch.

Petit could be another McAllister, and he could pass on some of his knowledge to Gerrard, especially over how to pick the right pass over distance, and despite Hassailbank being 32, he can still knock 'em in, as last weekend proved.

They won't win us the Championship, but either or both could do a lot of good for us next season, in my opinion.

What do people think?

i'd take hasselbaink now for cheap instead of paying 14m for an unproven french striker. hasselbaink may be gettin on but it's not about age, it's about putting the ball in the back of the net. he would do that.

Hasseilbank for one year would score at least 15 goals for Liverpool, and the likes of Pongolle and Baros could earn a lot from him.

Likewise, Le Tallec could learn from Petit, and there's the French connection there as well.

i don't see petit as being any better than hamann though. very similar players in most regards. we should have moved for scott parker before chelsea got him. he would have been perfect for us.

Hasselbaink yes. Petit no. Hasselbaink has got quality, drive & aggression in spades and would give Liverpool more of a cutting edge. As for Petit I don't see what he has to offer that we haven't already got, other than giving us a bit more strength in depth.

Hassailbank for definite, that guy is wasted at Chelsea.I dont understand Houlliers aversion to older players on short contracts. He would probably cost ten million less than Cisse which has to be a bargain.I cant comment on Petit as he hasnt played too much lately.

Good point about older players - the last time we took an older player on a short contract was Gary Mac and what a f##king inspiration he was, he changed the way the whole team played and was worth more than Heskey, Diouf, Diao et al put together

You forget how good Heskey was when we had McAllister.

Hasselbaink... Yes i'd take him now. I think he's still got alot of class despite being past his best and is better than anything we currently have including an off form Michael Owen.

Petit... would strengthen the squad but the squad doesn't need strengthing, the first 11 is the priority.

IMO Hasselbaink is still Chelski's best striker in spite of all the money they've spent. We should keep tabs on a lot of Chelski players, who knows how much they'll spend in the summer and how many players could be persuaded away from Stamford Bridge
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer

I wouldn't mind to sign Jimmy but I would never sign Petit, cos he is cr#p, why we should sign him, he is useless since he arrived at Chelsea from Barcelona. Petit is not fully 100% fit player ever I see, he was superb at Arsenal but when he was at Barcelona, he was flop then back to England with Chelsea, havn't see him as good player now, there is no way to buy him, if we got him, it will be massive flop, remember Steve Staunton went back to Liverpool on Bosman Rule, what happened to him, he was absolutely terrible.

Take Jimmy Floyd, take Jesper Gronkjaer aswell if we can.

By the way JBG, I was supportive of Sylvain Wiltord coming aswell.

But then i'm not the manager.

I'm not a huge advocate of either player coming, I'm only asking people what they think.

We probably have no room for Petit and it would only be worthwhile signing him if he showed some of his old form (unlikely) but Hassailbank could be an excellent stop gap for a season.

Petit - We did have a quality experienced player in Litmanen but we got rid of him without having hardly featured in the games - I don't want us to pay 40k a week for someone to warm the bench. as for Hassailbaink i'm not sure but I am sure that he would score more than Heskey.
