THE MICHAEL OWEN THREAD - all owen talk here from now on please

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Chelsea forever. » Mon Aug 29, 2005 9:52 am

Alan Shearer on Monday stepped up the campaign to bring Michael Owen to Newcastle when he proclaimed: "You would be a hero here".

Real Madrid striker Owen is believed to be wanted by former club Liverpool but has said his second choice would be a one-year loan at beleaguered Newcastle.

The pair played together for England and Shearer admitted he has been talking to Owen in a bid to convince him he should help the Magpies battle to end their current turmoil - they are second-bottom of the Premiership without a league goal in four matches and one point out of a possible 12.

"It doesn't take a genius to work out who we want," Shearer told BBC Radio Five Live. "We have three days left to try to convince him to come here.

"We're still in there fighting for him. I know if he came here he would be loved. They love their goalscorers up here and he would be a hero."

Shearer joked that he was "spending a fortune in telephone calls to Madrid" talking to the former Anfield hero, adding: "I know better than anyone what reception he would get here. I've had several phone conversations with him but I don't have to tell him what passionate supporters we are. In the end he'll make his own mind up and will do what is best for himself."

Liverpool are thought to be ready to make a bid for Owen, who is anxious for first-team football to make sure of his World Cup place if England make the finals.

well I think that is what negotiations are all about surely?

What you have is a simple case of show and tell...Owen at this point appears to be showing everything and Rafa is showing nothing. I've heard rumours that SFX are trying to catch Rafa alone in his caravan, strap him to a chair, cut his hand behind his back then throw some nice stingy stuff on it until he talks....maybe bop him on the nose, give him a ciggy and talk about his familys' history..........

Whoa....disappeared on a little True Romance fantasy there. The analogy isn't far off though...Rafa has showed nothing of his hand and Owen has been forced to beg beg beg.

We all know that he wants to play for England next year
We all know that he isn't gonna start much at Real this season
We all know he is concerned that this will jeopardise his chances in the England team.
We all know that next years world cup is the one where he'll be 'in his prime' so he needs to be there.
We all know Sven has outed him in the press.
We all know that Newcastle have made an offer and Real will let him go.
We all know that he really doesn't want to go there.
We all know that he really wants to play for us.
We all know that he really wants CL football.
We don't have a clue whether Rafa cares if he lives or dies at the moment.

This is pure genius in a world of spin and media manipulation. Rafa holds all the cards and the best bargaining position possible. I seem to remember Rafa playing him and his agents off like this just before he left as well. The man is as cunning as a fox who's just been appointed Professor of Cunning at Oxford University.

Its a pantomime

I dunna know , a fan of another team comes on here and writes rational eloquent  arguments and reports news that may affect Liverpool long term in a totally neutral stance then someone says ......."Hey chelski for never!...go and fukk yerself ! "  priceless  :D

Why is it insulting ? MO is desperate to leave Real  and its a messure of his desperation that he is even prepared to talk to them .........remember when he was interviewed in January or February time about Newcastle showing interest in him ? he smiled  and started to laugh  at the thought.

Now that virtually every team  of any importance in the EPL has shown little interest in signing him  and its seems that Raffa is keeping his own council as to wether he will make an offer , MO realises time is running out and quickly .
Yes he has publicly stated he wants to come home  and would only go to Newcastle on a loan , even that statement shows his desperation to come back home , but if Raffa doesnt want him then what is the lad to do ?  MO has made an almighty cockup  and he knows it , instead of enjoying a champions league medal he ended the season with splinters in his @rse  , he knows he cocked up and is desperate to come home , we know it Raffa knows it  and  the footballing world knows it ...............NEWCASTLE IS A LAST RESORT ! :blues:

Apologies if this has hit another thread already:

Marseille seek to bring in Cisse

Marseille president Pape Diouf said a potential deal to bring Liverpool's Djbril Cisse to the French club hangs in the balance.

"It's complicated with Cisse. But this is not over," said Diouf ahead of Wednesday's transfer deadline.

"I am waiting to see how things go but as I have always said, it's a complicated situation."

Marseille are currently bottom of the league after after failing to win any of their opening five matches.

However, Marseille coach Jean Fernandez insists the club needs to bring in a player to help the backline rather than a striker.

"We need a central defender, that's what I want and I have already told the managers Pape Diouf and Jose Anigo," Fernandez said.

.. if he is gonna be in talks with us, does that mean we have agreed a fee with Real? Is it not the case that players are given permission to talk to othet clubs once both clubs have a greed a fee ?

I can't wait for Wednesday night when the end of this will be in sight.  I have got to the stage when I am really bored with this going on and on and on.  Maybe then we can get back to the real stories of how we are going to do in the premiership and CL.   :sleep

Hi, Newcastle fan here just came to post my thoughts. It's true that we do have a fair bit of cash to throw around but please don't forget that we were one of only two clubs to make a profit in the premiership last season. Also, unlike Leeds, we have a 52,000 sell out crowd pumping revenue into the club and some of the most loyal fans in the premiership buying merchendise. A leeds situation is WAY OFF whilst Shepard is in charge because he's a tight git at the best of times.

Concerning Owen, I don't think he's the answer to our problems at Newcastle. We have made a bad start undoubtedly but don't forget we've played both Arsenal and Man Utd. He's an arrogant :censored: if he thinks that he's too big for a club like Newcastle when you look at the calibre of some of the players we do have here. Personally I think Liverpool have a better player in Cisse. Hope the outcome is determined soon because it's starting to drag.

Lee.

Well I don't think he's half the player he was when he burst onto the scene for Liverpool and think that's he's lost a yard of pace. Would much prefer that the toon went for Kuyt or someone else. We've made a lot of changes this summer without much time to gel but despite Souey getting critised, he has brought in good players with good attitudes and it will click soon. On paper, we have a better team than you lot even though you lot won't admit it ;)
