presuming we havnt come out of pot 1 yet. and they stay in the bag. THEN bearing in mind that uefa will let lfc/ cfc meet??

or are they going to actually start with the "title holders" actually in place first. i.e  GROUP A/ POSITION 1. then draw out of pot 2 hoping chelsea come out(balls marked :D ) next.. then they dont have to put them back in the hat incase its an english side in position 1 ?????  :p

therll be some subterfuge to it   :no

oh well we'll know in an hour anyway

they seperate the balls somehow in order for that not too happen.

The first pot contains Real Madrid, AC Milan, Barcelona, Liverpool, Manchester United, Internazionale, Bayern Munich and Arsenal.

In the second pot we find Porto, Juventus, PSV, Lyon, Panathinaikos, Chelsea, Villarreal and Ajax.

The third will have the names of Brugge, Anderlecht, Olympiakos, Schalke, Sparta Prague, Lille, Rangers and Werder Bremen

And the fourth group is made up of Benfica, Rosenborg, Real Betis, Udinese, Fenerbahce, Rapid Vienna.

Liverpool could face Chelsea in the Champions League group stage after Uefa confirmed yesterday that they would not be protected from playing another English team and that Jose Mourinho's side will be among the second seeds in today's draw in Monaco.

The European champions, who are bracketed among the top eight seeds, would normally have avoided playing another Premiership club at this stage but lost that right when finishing outside the top four in the league last season and had to start the current Champions League campaign in the first qualifying round.

However Liverpool will be keen to avoid Chelsea, despite eliminating them at the semi-final stage last spring. They lost three out of five games against the Premiership champions last season, including in the Carling Cup final, and Rafael Benítez is certain to prefer to be paired with PSV Eindhoven or Lyon, who are also in the second pot.

The alternatives for Chelsea - if they do not draw Liverpool - look less appealing: Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are all potential opponents.

Liverpool could also face city rivals Everton, should David Moyes's side have come through the third qualifying round last night, but cannot play Manchester United or Arsenal as they are also in the first seeding group.

There are several potentially tricky teams among the third and fourth seeding and the English contingent will be hoping to avoid teams such as Real Betis, who finished fourth in La Liga last season, the Bundesliga runners-up Schalke 04 and the Serie A side Udinese.

Olympiakos, Lille, Benfica and Sparta Prague are also in today's draw together with Champions League debutants Artmedia Bratislava, who have already eliminated Celtic and Partizan Belgrade in their two qualifying rounds.

Another team making their first appearance is Thun, the Swiss town with a population of 40,000 who on Tuesday night saw their team qualify for the group stage with a 4-0 aggregate win over Malmo.

From the Echo.

STEVEN GERRARD was today named Europe's most valuable footballer.

The Reds skipper was given UEFA's prestigious award at a glittering ceremony in Monaco, edging out the greats of the modern game.

The decision was based on last year's Champions League performances when Gerrard's inspirational displays helped Liverpool become champions of Europe for the fifth time.

The news was the perfect boost ahead of tomorrow night's Super Cup Final against CSKA Moscow.

Meanwhile boss Rafa Benitez has been defended his decision to rest the big guns in midweek and save them for tomorrow's Super Cup Final, insisting 'winning trophies will always be my first priority'.

The Reds endured an anxious night against Sofia in midweek as Benitez left Xabi Alonso and Jamie Carragher on the bench.

But the Anfield manager is adamant the decision will be vindicated if Liverpool win their third Super Cup against CSKA Moscow.

"This is a trophy I value. For a big club like Liverpool, every trophy should be valuable," said Benitez today.

"That is why we're in football. To win competitions. This is very important. Some people like to say one competition is more prestigious than another. That's true, but we are playing this final to win.

"I was happy to miss out on the opportunity to win the competition last season because I came to Liverpool after Valencia won the UEFA Cup. Now I'm even happier I have the chance to win it with Liverpool.

"I think one of the most important aims you can have is to earn the right to be in the Super Cup because it means you have enjoyed big success to get there.

"I know being in the top four of the Premiership is very important, but you will never see any club honours list recording an historic fourth place in the Premiership.

"History remembers champions and trophy winners. For us, this could be our second trophy in a short space of time and that's what you're remembered for."

Liverpool, who have Harry Kewell back in the squad tomorrow, are number one seeds in today's Champions League draw, ensuring they'll avoid most of the tournament favourites.

* Michael Owen remains hopeful of securing his dream move back to Liverpool - despite Newcastle's record bid to try and lure him to St James' Park.

Despite the current frenzy of speculation, no decision on his future is thought to be imminent.

Cech deseved it, he was consistent, Dudek had one good game. Although I'm sure Cech would rather be in Dudek's shoes. :D
