The board - Is moores the problem?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Since Moores became Chairman he's appointed 3 managers, Souness, Evans and now Houllier. Bad choices.

Souness, wasn't ready for the job, he had only managed Rangers, these were the days when we could have had our pick of managers, so was Souness really the best choice??

Then Evans, an attempt to go back to the bootroom, if Moores had visited the training ground just once, he'd have seen Evans wasn't strong enough to handle millionaires who were more interested in modelling than football, so Evans, bad choice.

Now Houllier, well, shouldn't Moores have guessed what he was getting when the only other clubs interested in Houller were Celtic and Sheff Wed, not exactly giants of Europe. And even then he didn't have the strength or ruthlessness to dispense with his friend Evans, so the joint-manager nightmare began. Now he hasn't the strength to get rid of Houllier after two years of underachievement. Views?

It's fair to say we've been in the wilderness for 14 yrs, and by that I mean no championship. Watching Milan the other night I was wondering how long did their 'bad' period last. I think Milan have had 3 great teams in this period, in between a couple of yrs in the wilderness. Madrid & Munich have also re-built great teams on 2 or 3 occasions. Fergie has also re-built the mancs a couple of times.

Maybe our board does need some changes. 14 yrs is much too long in modern day football for a team such as LFC. I know people say long term decline happened to teams such as Blackpool, Preston, etc, etc. But with the revenues and opportunities in todays game, supported by a worldwide fan-base, this should not happen to a truly big team in the modern game, if run properly.

Good points, but there is a warning from history here.

Arsenal went something like 18 years after the winning the double in 1971 before they won the championship again.

Man Utd went through 25 years of decline.

Inter Milan were one of the dominant teams in the 1960s and they have rarely captured their past form since, despite all the money in the world.

Even Real Madrid went for decades without winning the European Cup, Juventus in Italy went through a very barren spell in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

I have no doubt that Liverpool will someday enjoy a good spell once more, but it looks like we'll have to wait a minimum of 3 or 4 years before we see a Championship at Anfield because even if Houllier does turn things around, it won't happen over night.

We're too big a club to go into serious decline. Agree with you that, if run properly, we've got the muscle & the finance to force ourselves back into the European elite.
