Next season... - The way i see the top five going.

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Owzat » Mon Mar 22, 2004 8:37 pm

A number of people thought we'd win the Premiership this season and were badly wrong. The addition of Kewell and Finnan was seen as resolving all our problems and it didn't. Henchoz was right that Liverpool are as good as manu - but only on paper. The 1st team looks good but still isn't producing the goods. Whether Cisse will or won't succeed is pure speculation, but I really can't see one player making the difference. I'd rather we signed two or more players with Premiership experience or experience in a top European league for around the same combined price. Houllier's recent spending record is enough to make fans weep

Some of you will have heard the expression - "putting all your eggs in one basket" - now think of Cisse for £14m

Houllier's recent spending record is enough to make fans weep.

Kewell £5m
Finnan £3m
Pongolle and Le Tallec £6m combined fee

I tend to disagree. To me Harry Kewell could become one of the best in his position in the world. Finnan looks a player with superb potential and has shown glimpsis of whats to come in the future. In some matches he's looked superb. Yes he's had a bad patch but he's shown undoubted class and looks like he'll be a cracking player once he's fully settled. Le Tallec has looked a good intelligent and creative player and looks like he could develope into something good given time and Pongolle has looked eletric at times and looked a really good prospect. His finishing, first touch and awareness need to improve but they will all come with experience.

To me it just looks like you're being petty. Who'd heard of Hyypia before he signed? It works both ways. His transfer record is very good, its not the best, its not superb, but its good. It certainly isn't sh##e like some people try to make out.

In my opinion WITH or WITHOUIT GH we will improve next season on this season but lets face it , thats not going to be difficult is it !!!! We would have to be cursed to have so "key" players out next season and i see Keweel settling ina nd producing what we know he is capable of. I'm not sure Cisse wil be a Liverpool player next season and if nt would like to see Kanute at Liverpool to give us some aerial options. The Right side of midfield needs a top drawer player, I like Murphy but he's had an average season. Diouff "might" be the answer but how long can we afford to wait ? My prediction would be Arsenal then Chelsea OR Liverpool. Surprise inclusion in 4th would be Villa and the Mancs to finish 5th (Hopefullly ). ol on NEXT season cos after Thursday I fear our season will truly be over :(

You're being selective and petty, for every good signing there is a poor to ***** one.

Diouf £10m, Cheyrou £3m, Biscan't £4m, Diao £4m, Diomede £3m, Heskey £11m, Smicer £4m, Dudek £4m, Riise £4m.......

(not to mention the players he let go - Litmanen, Fowler, Berger, Anelka............ )

Houllier takes credit for most signings, but I have heard that he was fortunate in some (Hyypia was one). If I recall correctly he sent one scout to a match to watch a completely different player and the scout advised him to sign someone we did (wish I could remember where I saw that)

I have to disagree with Riise being in that list. He was a good buy who is just short of form and coming back from injury.

Not trying to defend GH or Heskey here BUT at the time we signed him Heskey was one of the hottest prospects in the league . Every fan (back then) was made up that he was coming to us. Just a pity he never punched his weight. He could have been a "Mike Tyson" but turned out to be a "Frank Bruno"
(excuse the boxing comparisons......but you know what I'm saying):(

I agree that Riise and Heskey should not be on the list.

Both can do the business on their day.

Selective and Petty?

You said recent signings.... they were his most recent. Smicer wasn't a bad signing at all. £4m??? thats what you pay for a squad player, just because he's never lived upto his reputation doesn't mean he's a bad player.

Fortunate with the signing of Hyypia?? Don't talk boll##ks!!

Just because you go to watch someone else doesn't mean it was fotunate. It was a world class signing and trying to take that away from him just shows your stupid attitude towards Houllier.

FYI Stu, this is the quote I was replying to with regards his overall transfer record. If you're saying that is based on his "recent signings" then you really are the king of talking *****

As for your Houllier comment on fortune, of course it is fortunate if you send a scout to watch a team and he sees someone else worth signing. The manager can't take credit if the player the scout reports back wasn't one he wanted watched! All credit goes to the SCOUT

Well actually, stu, many players have been signed on the say-so of top scouts. And it won't come as a surprise to hear, that a few players are signed on video evidence and a couple of brown bags full of money. Now I'm not saying Gerard Houllier has perpetrated any dodgy dealings, but he has certainly signed a few video nasties.

If Houllier stays:

1) Arsenal
2) Chelsea
3) Man U
4) Liverpool
5) Newcastle

If he goes:

1) Arsenal
2) Liverpool
3) Chelsea
4) Newcastle
5) Villa

You will note the absence of the scum in the second list; this is because I'll celebrate GH's departure with a quick trip to old trafford armed with petrol & matches, leaving them homeless.

On a more serious note I think Villa do have a realistic chance of top5 if they carry on improving under O'Leary. As for Arsenal they're in a class of their own and I can't see anyone finishing above them.

On the ever-present topic of Cisse I think he will come and hope he makes a good impact but I have my doubts, although I hope I'm wrong. If one person can make a radical difference to the side it's a new manager, not a new striker. It's unrealistic to expect one player to revolutionise things if the rest of the team aren't playing to the best of their abilities.
