Rafa is in for the long haul - And the board is loving it

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

With some managers, you can tell if they aren't going to be around for too long. They spend big, try (and usually fail) to leave some sort of big impression on a team, only sign short deals and eventually, when the slightest little worry occurs, they make a run for it with a fat $ettlement and a slightly longer CV. Gianluca Vialli's brief spell at Watford comes to mind, and I'm sure we all remember how succesful that was.

Rafa is different. He signed for 5 years. And he is doing things right. Now, when you turn up at a club like Liverpool with it's huge fanbase and pots of cash (although those pots never seem to be big enough) it's very tempting to just rush out into football's shopping centre and do one of two things. You can either; a) Go running around the stores snapping up whatever is on special offer and come away with loads and loads of stuff that you are going to end up not wanting at all or b) You spend all your time trying to fight off the richies for the massive star items. Both of these styles of shopping will leave you tired, broke, full of regrets and surrounded by useless junk that you must now defend the purchases of to the people who gave you the money to shop with. Needless to say, this is not the way to go. Rafa has a list!

Now I know that the whole thing about Rafa "not buying the players I wanted him to buy" thing has been done to death (several times over) so don't worry, this is not one of those threads where I argue the toss about "why didn't we sign SWP?" or "Where are all the super*s?". This is a thread that makes me happy. I'm looking to the future. The future's bright. The future's red with a Liver bird on it!

Today, Rafa has/will/has-confirmed-he-will-be signing some chap from Austria called Idrizaj. Never heard of him? Join the club! What I have heard is that he won the Austrian Young Player Of The Year award and is being chased by Arsenal and Inter Milan. Another incredibly talented youngster with bags and bags of potential signs for us. Not Man Ure, not Chel$ki, not Arsenal or Real Madrid, Us.

Let's look at some of these kids and a couple of points that we know about them.

Idrizaj - best youngster in Austria, wanted by Arsenal and Inter
Gonzales - best youngster in Chile (hope we get him now)
Barragan - was wanted by Real M, Barca and Sevilla
Hobbs - was wanted by Arsenal
Carson - was wanted by Chel$ki

To say the least, any one of these suitors wouldn't have to do much to attract these impressionable youngsters, would they? But we got them. So, let us take a hyperthetical look at Rafa's team of Tomorrow... Today!

.                           Carson
     Barragan                               Warnock
                Whitbread     Hobbs
                             Walsh
        Potter             Idrizaj           Gonzales
                  Mellor            Sinama

Could this be the team, that in a couple of years will lift the EPL trophy? Who knows. What I do know is that if these kids all fullfill their potential and are interspersed in a squad that includes Gerrard, Alonso, Sissoko, Carra, Cisse, Riise and a few others, it will be very good indeed.

Now, it could be said that Houllier bought young and failed, and that is widely correct although some of his youngsters did turn out OK. But the players that Rafa has bought are not the "hot tips" that Houllier sought after, nor are they the "high risk buys" of the frenchman's era either. We are fighting off the big boys of Europe for these players, and what's more, we are winning.

OK, I can't deny it, I would have loved SWP, Joaquin, Milito, Raul and all the others, but at the end of the day they didn't come so what's the point in crying about it. And why cry anyway when you can look to a bright tomorrow, a stronger squad and a manager who is dedicated to winning and doing what is best for the team.

I tell you people, Everything's coming up Liverpool!   :)

Thats a really well thought out and interesting post. I am actually of the opinion myself that over the next few seasons there is going to be a polorization of philosophies into how to run a football club. On the one hand you will Chelsea and to a lesser extent Manure and Madrid (I actually think that the latter two are in a really weak position unless they change) who will be looking to splash big and get the established stars in. On the other, you will have everyone else, who will be trying to follow the Arsenal/Ajax model, where you pick up unproven players or disgruntled benchers from the big spenders and mould them into a team.
As I've said before, I think Chelsea's spending power ensures they will win the Premiership every year until FIFA change the rules, but that doesn't mean the rest can't build top teams if they're sensible.

Manana - pronounced "Man-yarn-a" and it usually has an accent over the first "n" means - tomorrow.

I think it's good that Rafa is building for the future and bringing in talented youngsters in a similar way to what Wenger has done with such success at Arsenal.

However, spotting talented youngsters and beating off competition from other big clubs is only half the battle.  These youngsters, at 16/17 are far from complete players, and it is their development over the next 3-4 years that will probably determine whether they're going to be top players.  It is down to Rafa and the LFC coaching staff to make sure that these guys reach their full potential.

Under the Houllier regime we saw Le Tallec arguably deteriorate rather than improve and the likes of Pongolle, Baros and Traore look average at best despite their undoubted talent in their late teens.

I think the signs are good under Rafa as far as player development goes as well as spotting these kids.  We have seen Pongolle and Traore improve a lot over the last season since Rafa arrived, and you can only wonder how much better they may be right now if they had been working under Rafa for all of their LFC careers.  I think the future of the club is in very good hands.

It's awesome the amount of highly rated young talent that Rafa is hoovering up....Carson, Hobbs, Barragan, Antwi, Roque plus the Austrian player.  Signing a load of 18 and 19 year olds must mean Rafa plans on being here for a long time...it certainly looks promising  :)

I know who these players are, however, I could'nt possibly pass judgement even concerning potential on most just yet. There are several young players mentioned in this thread though that have already caught my eye in 1 way or another.

Whitebread- I am not too keen on this guy, Traore's(he just can't-he just can't-he just can't control his feet) mistake against burnley had alot to do with Whitebread, which was cut out of the re-runs of the goal.

Mellor- big heart, not enough for me. Have you ever seen 1 player miss so many gilt edged chances as this guy?

Pongolle- big star of the future, possibly this season

Potter- no

Carson- bright future, probably elsewhere, will not shift Pepe.

Thats my hat in the ring.     :)

Its great that we are buying young talent for the future,i hope the academy can also unearth young local talent too. That next Robbie Fowler,Steven Gerrard and Carragher is equally important so our beloved club dosn't lose its identity with local fans.We need a good solid English heart beat in our sides if not a merseyside one.

Did anyone see the end of his press conference today?

A reporter asks if Rafa is interested in the Cricket and Rafa said:

'Ahh Cricket is a fantastic game, because you can watch it with people and nobody knows the rules! and you spend the game discussing what the rules are'

then he said:

'Its a fantastic game where you say to your wife, I'm going to play a game, and then you return 5 - 10 days later!'

Honestly, its genius, the reporters are pi$$ing themselves.
