Morientes - How long do we give him to perform?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Sabre wrote:Hi, as I did last year with Real Sociedad's player Xabi Alonso , I will give my thoughts to you about some of the names that have popped up in this thread

Reina: He's a decent keeper, top average as we'd say here. Yep he stopped quite a lot of penalties last season but then again, that might be a matter of luck. Anyway, decent signing, he might not be brilliant but somehow he provides confidence and has always managed to be in the starting eleven although he had strong competence in his position. Although good, I find this signing quite expensive. I wonder what's wrong with Sander Westerveld, he used to play in Liverpool, and did great in my team, I quite like this keeper.

Figo: I'm really happy he didn't sign for Liverpool. Nothing to do with him coming from the so hated Real Madrid, I used to love this player. But he's quite old by now, he doesn't have the explosion in dribbling he used to have and his team attitude is awful, he just doesn't admit to be changed and things like that, sends poisonous senteces to the press when things just doesn't happen as he'd like to.

Morientes: Rafa seems to rely on him, so does Luis Aragones (Spanish coach) and so do I. I pretty much like him since he nailed a couple of goals against my team when he played for Zaragoza. He's one of the few proper strikers Spain have. I think you still haven't seen what he can provide Liverpool, and I think that's because he had been a reserve in madrid for a long time. I'm pretty sure that as Nihat and many other players did, he will explode this second season. IMHO it's very important to do the preseason with the team. Good finishing, excellent ball protection, good movements, that's what you can  expect from him. And I dare to say that he can achieve more than 13 goals.

Excuse me for my incorrect english :)

Sabre

P.D. I'd preffer the Cisse - Morientes couple, Cisse provides what Morientes hasn't and viceversa. I definitely think Morientes is better than Baros (wich I have seen playing for liverpool not like you but quite often)

im not sure if the comments on Reina or (especially) Figo are relevant to this thread but anyway.

You are definately forgetting the Cisse/Crouch partnership. Nando is not going to be fighting Baros for his spot (if he stays), Cisse wil. Nando will be fighting Crouch for his assistant stricker role

Has Crouch earned this roll yet?

We spent alot of money on the lad, but is he a one season wonder, or is he coming in to his own?  Is Nando fit/settled in the league?

Time will tell, but if we sell Baros, then we are stuck with questions and projections............

nando is class, there is no doubt and that he is not the out-and-out striker, we all know even before he signs for us.

He scored with a well taken, trademark header of his and his second goal was more because of the goalkeeper's failings. But the goals were really needed by him, you can see from his euphoria in his celebrations which hurt Gerrard after lifting Gerrard akwardly that he really needed to score to boost his own confidence. I'd read that Gerrard said he could have had a back injury from that lift by Morrenties - just goes to show how relieved Morrientes was to score.

He had some space against CSKA Sofia but I really doubt that EPL opponents will give him the space and will challenge in a far more physical manner. This is the challenge that he needs to rise to if he were to become a success that his talents should make him to be. Those 2 goals will have done his confidence a world of good.

What about the others that wasn't. Selective amnesia..yes?

Anyway, Morientes did perform better than his average self yesterday. Not to take anything away from Morientes, I feel CSKA goalkeeper is not really up to standard last night.

People keep on saying, morientes need better service. Currently not scoring because bad service. How come than the same logic doesn't apply to other non-performing strikers? Are they not plaque by the same type of service? Or the service is bad only when Morientes is playing. Doesn't make an ounce of sense. Yet you guys are buying it.
Improvement of service will improve any strikers strike rate, whoever you put in front.

Morientes still has a long way to go before being able to establish himself in the premiership. Else we will keep turning a corner again and again (if you still remember this quote).... Nonetheless, an overall improved performance from his usual average. Cheers.

I am sick of this, are you a Liverpool Fan or do you eat toffee for breakfast, lunch and dinner?? Give the guy a chance. He is foreign. He needs time. Forlan got no time at the Scum devils and now when he does get time he becomes the top scorer in Europe. I am so angry because when did we allow ourselves to get brainwashed by the papers who write :censored: everyday about different players not being up to scratch when they have only been here for five minutes. Again, I repeat, he is foreign and not every import settles is straight away. Yes, Alonso did but for Morientes, it will take time. He will score goals just like he did last night and just like he always has throughout his career and when he does, I wonder were your comments are going to be then? Support your players, especially those who are making an effort. We all know Benitez won't suffer time wasters so if he believes Mortientes is cool, then believe in him for :censored: sake. I really really hate this fickle attitude where people are slagging him off today and loving him tomorrow. Get behind the team and believe.

Does being a Liverpool fan mean supporting blindly?
Does being a Liverpool fan mean being unrealistic?
Does being a Liverpool fan mean having blind faith?
Does being a Liverpool fan mean not having a critical view?
If the above is true, yes I am not a Liverpool fan. Will not want to be one too. You can choose how you want to support Liverpool, I choose mine. So pissoff somewhere else.

Furthermore, no one is slagging him off. Just saying he may not perform well in the premiership if his attitude doesn't change. He has joined Liverpool for what 6months? Yet people are claiming 5 minutes. You see the illogical thinking that has besetted these dellusinal fans to justify their claims. It is amazing... maybe a study need to be conducted on how sports create delusional people. He need to work his :censored: off, not for fans to make excuse for him (understood?).

"Class are forever, need little time to be in the best form".. Again who made those comments? Why is it taking Morientes so long? Unless... god forbid he has no class? ???!!! Silly comments will get silly retort. Simple as that.

If he manage to make it in the premiership, then it is great. Else he must ship off like everybody else. Will not be given forever to return to form. We have given forever to Gerald Houllier and it is enough. No more undivided unreserving blind faith.. It gets us nowhere.

:censored: off? I think that you should :censored: off. The fact is you know little about football and just like Hansen, you jump on the bandwagon of being critical. Are you so bored staring at your poster of Ducan Ferguson and eating prawn sandwiches that you have nothing better to do than be critical of your own players? I wonder how you will react if Morientes does come good. You will be another one of those supporters who kick someone when they are down and pat them on the back when they are up. Supporting your players is not blind faith, it is support which is what a supporter is suppose to do. Did you not hear "You'll never walk alone" at half time during the Champions League cup final when we were 0-3 down? Do you call that blind faith too just because some or us actually believed in the players. Yes, I back anyone who wants to have a go at Kewell because I think he has had more than one chance, but who said that Morientes attitude was wrong? Where did you source that from? There is nothing wrong with his attitude. He is in a different country, has to adapt to the culture the climate and lanuage. Some players adapt quickly and produce immediate form, others do not and take time. You seem to justify your right to criticise only by saying it is your right but you don't take any of that into account. You call yourself Thinkpad, but when you take none of the elements into consideration, I ask have you thought at all. Remember, Hansen is paid to criticise and construct immediate opinions about players just to make television, whereas you are a fan. You are suppose to believe in players well after the media have written them off just to sell another back page. That is why you are a supporter and not a reporter. I happen to be one of the supporters who believes we have a decent team and I actually watch world football and know a great deal about players from Spain, Italy and France. Morientes is highly regarded for a reason. He just needs time for that reason to be apparant here. You ask why he is taking so long to perform? I can answer that because I am not impatient like you. I accept that some foreign players are going to take time. If by the end of this season, he has done nothing, then yes, I might start to criticise but I refuse to do it after such little time.

It seems like everybody like to take the "Champions League" game where Liverpool were down 3-0 only to win it later as something Liverpool will be able to do at will. Someone must have owe it to us then... It is extraordinary but you must wake up from that dream and stop casting dispersion on fans who are more realistic.

If everything is good and dandy why bother improving? Hey, we are the best because we won the CL. We can't even get fourth place least you forget. So snap out of using the CL league as your arguement.

I do not subscribe to the notion that as long as they are Liverpool players they are the best. And I do not owe you any apology for that.

Morientes may have a great reputation, he was good. He still could be but at the momment ask yourself this- is he better than everybody else? Or has he shown any qualities that endeared him in Monaco that Liverpool fans are dying to search? No one wants him to fail, me included. His current stamina, mental thoughness is really not up to premiership standard. To improve he must have the right attitude. Not "this exercise is to tough, I will just take my time in the next six months" attitude. Btw, he has been with us for six months.

People always mentioned about giving him more time. How much more time? Forever is not an option nor the luxury Liverpool can afford. Fans need to choose who they want to support.. Morientes or Liverpool. To me I will give him another 6 months.

Lastly, I may be critical of him but I don't think pointing out his weakness as critising. At least not in my book... Pretending there is no weakness won't make it go away.. It is in a way very sad to bluff oweself.

Your attitude and thinking kinda reminded me of George Bush (US President). During his crusade against Iraq, it is always "Either you are with us or you are with the terrorist". Basically no choice... I never like George Bush.

Fernando is definitely getting better with more games under his belt. He scored two and came close several times against sofia. He has definitely taken time to settle down but having joined liverpool 7 months ago(including end of season break and pre-season), i'm prepared to give him some more time to adjust to the english game. No matter what, i hope the he starts banging in goals as he was doing at Real.
