A'right
A bit of an old chestnut this but I'm trying to find the origin of the Kop anthem 'Poor Scouser Tommy'.
So far I've discovered that the 'Highland Division' he was put in was most probably the 2nd battlion The Liverpool Scottish (formed 1900), The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (to whom they were and still are affiliated in times of war).
To be 'under a Libyan sun' would put him at the first battle of Tobruk in 1941 in which the city fell to Rommel. The 2nd were the last unit to surrender.
There is a version of the song which says 'under an Arabian sun' but I for one don't ever remember singing it on the Kop or away from home nearly every other week in the 70's. What's more is that we never fought the Nazis' in (Saudi) Arabia.
I don't know if this was a soldier's song adapted by the Kop or whether it was an entirely homespun thing.
Does anyone have any idea?
