Daniel alves -right motives for a move?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby daddyo » Sat Jul 23, 2005 1:40 pm

This was lifted from Sky Sports site.

Could anyone be a little suspicious of his reasons for being here?(if he does make it)

And what kind of message does that put across to the board and the fans?

Personally i'm a little uneasy by this attitude of 'the money would have to be important' given that broadly speaking, in a move of that magnitude it's a fair bet he'd be better paid.

Sevilla's Daniel Alves would be happy to join European champions Liverpool - if the price was right.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez is thought to have made a £7 million bid for the Brazilian as he continues his summer rebuilding.

The 22-year-old says that he would move to Anfield if the deal was right for both him and his club Sevilla.

Alves says that the financial aspects of any move would have to be right for him to move on, although he is keen to further his career.

"The chances of me staying at this club are the same as me leaving," said Alves.

"My aim is to earn as much money as possible to secure my family's future.

"I'm happy here but if there's something better elsewhere then there is no doubt I'd want to go.

"The idea of every player is to grow as a sportsman and financially.

"I'll only leave if the offer is right for Sevilla as well as for me and my family. Then there's no problem.

"I plan to work hard - and I have people to deal with these matters so I'm not worried."

Yep I read that story earlier on and instantly decided I don't want that guy anywhere near a Liverpool shirt.  He basically admitted he was a mercenary.

Thats the thing with some of these south american players though, some of them come from absolutely awful family backgrounds, serious poverty.  I read an article recently where brazilian gangsters were kidnapping the families of up and coming footballers over there and demanding huge sums of money to secure their safety.  Thats why most of these guys jump at the chance to join big european clubs, earn as much as they can and then get their family out of the country also.

You can see why guys like Alves have this mentality, but I have to say that while I understand it, I personally wouldn't want players like this at our club.

Some of you might remember Gilberto basically admitting after signing for Arsenal that he had done it for his family.  I don't think playing in England was his preference.  Despite that he's been good for Arsenal, and he shows good commitment on the pitch, but not all these guys will be good professionals like Gilberto so you have to be careful.

He's talking about securing his families future, he is Brazilian and maybe isn't earning much at Sevilla, and needs money to make his family safe as it is a difficult country to live in.
It's probably not tactful to admit to the money being the main drive though.

May not be entirely tactful, but which sportsman does not want to secure his family's future? I have seen a few of his games in Spain, and there was no questioning his hunger for the game. At least he is honest, and he wants to grow- AS A SPORTSMAN and financially.
I think you guys are over reacting!

I suppose most of the posters in here don't know how everyday life is in Brazil for most people. It is probably much worse than any of you guys think. Football is almost the only way to escape from poverty, drugs and crime. So him telling the truth and looking to earn money to help his family shouln't come as a surprise.
If football is banned in heaven. I'd rather go to hell.
