Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby JohnBull » Wed Mar 10, 2004 1:15 pm

The reaction to the Porto result worries me.I remember when Blackburn won the league. I was working away and managed to get home in time to watch the game in a pub in Huyton. I was stunned when "Red Supporters" cheered when Blackburn scored against us because they thought that it meant that The Mancs would win at West Ham and still lose the title. They honestly felt that it would be better for Liverpool to lose than The Mancs to win the title.
I know I was spoilt by being there during the glory days when there was no one who could look down on The Reds . I really didn't care what any other team did as long as we played well and won.
Everyone is made up that Porto won but there is a danger that you end up like the majority of Bluenoses who really would rather see us lose than worry over the rubbish they're supporting.
I've loved this team for a long long time and while I watch other football it is the quality of Liverpool that's all important. If we were challenging for the title and our nearest rivals lose then I'll cheer my head off. If we were in the Champions League and The Mancs were knocked out, then I'm glad a danger has gone. If we are not in the race then that worries me more than anything.
There should be a tradition and class at Anfield that The Mancs will never reach. We are the best club that this country has ever produced and I doubt that our levels of consistency will ever be beaten. It is our current position that is a cause for concern - I don't give a bugger what anyone else is doing.

True, i'll admit it, I am guilty of this, I HATE Manchester United, particularly their manager and Gary Neville, who's face offends me.

Your point is excellent, all Bluenoses care about these days is whether they can take comfort in the fact that Liverpool get beaten rather than win themselves.   I try not to get too worked up when Manchester United lose on the outside, because someone very close to me actually supports Manchester United, but on the inside i'm loving it all!!  Watching the players trudge off the field, having lost, post match interviews, losers medals, the lot......

I take more comfort and relief when Liverpool win than when Manchester United lose.  That I can assure you of.  However it is easier to watch Manchester United this season because they are not having it all their own way for a change.  You have to admit, it does add something good to your day when they lose.

A good point though, I remember that Blackburn game, how I wanted Manchester United to lose so much, but that was because we accepted as fans that we were not good enough to be actually challenging for the Premiership ourselves that day.  Now, I want them to lose even more because (and it kills me saying this) we now should be challenging, stop being pretenders and letting them have their own way.

They are there for the taking now, they are not much better than us as a squad anymore, their players are aging, their replacements not good enough and more importantly THEY KNOW IT.

I too dislike the Mancs with a passion. The reason for this is their arrogance and the fact that they constantly harp on about being "the biggest club in the world". Liverpool have won more Leagues, more European Cups, more League Cups, more UEFA Cups and more Supercups than the Mancs, and in my opinion the yard stick in measuring who is the biggest club in the world is the amount of trophies in the cabinet.

That makes Real Madrid the greatest club in the world followed by AC Milan. UTD are behind the likes of Pool, Bayern, Ajax and Juventus in my opinion. Sure, they sell a lot of shirts and have bags of money, but they have a measly 2 European Cups compared to Real's 9 or 10.

I don't particularly care about Arsenal and Chelsea. In fact, I would like to see either of them win the CL this year, as at least we can then say that we were 30 points behind the best team in Europe in 2003/04!

However, it just shows how low we have fallen if our only pleasure we get from 2004 is to laugh at Manure being dumped from the CL. At least they are in the competition.

Its like a skinny 18 year old laughing at Mike Tyson being knocked out in a world heavy weight bout...who are we to laugh at UTD?

I dont mean to be picky JBG,but liverpool are bigger trophy winners than Milan.Of the two European trophies they have won six while we have won seven. If you include the old Cup winners cup then they are one ahead of us.But I wont include it as it doesnt suit my argument :D

all i see in these chat rooms is manure that and manchester scum this. I also see fellow reds giving our beloved team stick why can we not start thinking about us winning the uefa cup this season! granted its not the premier european cup competition but its better than most competitions liverpool enter to win.

Being realistic..we have very little chance of progressing much further in the uefa cup?...once we meet a decent team.We have to look to next season when hopefully with a new manager in place we can build a team who can seriously challenge for the top honours, including the title, which after 5yrs under gh we  have failed miserably. :(

I despise Man u and I was one of the ones who cheered when Blackburn scored against Liverpool ..if that makes me any less a supporter then i accept it !I wanted the title to go to King Kennys Blackburn not Old Trafford! Pure and simple!

When anyone says "they despise" a team I wonder what sport they are following. Do you want every team we play against to just rollover and die? Or do you want to see Liverpool Football Club, the greatest club this country has EVER produced, return to the top by being the best.
We showed more class, both teamwise and supporterwise, than any other English side has ever done. That class was not born from jealousy or envy of other teams but from an aknowledgement of just how good we were. We didn't give a bugger what others thought because WE were THE BEST.
It saddens me when I see our supporters spending more time enjoying others defeats than OUR victories.

I dont buy into this pot of gold for finishing fourth rubbish.
Newcastle probably did'nt make enough to pay the air fare.
Utd. will hardly clean up for 16th.
We're still in europe tommorrow and its a trophy we can win.
Celtic could have won it and Porto did,it did not seem to do them any harm.
We all love our team JOHN BULL but that does'nt mean we have to like others.

As an addition: Liverpool has only been associated with the rampant corruption within UEFA on the receiving end (in particular the away leg against Inter Milan in the 60s which I saw) but I would consider Real Madrid to be NO WHERE NEAR the standard we achieved over the same period.
The Hysel business (which I was also at) was an excellent excuse to take us out of the equation when everyone knew had nothing to do with OUR supporters. If it had been Real Madrid there would have been Belgian builders lynched the following day and the team would have been awarded the cup for the next fiove years.

I don't like Manchester United.  Nothing can take that away from me, it's a part of who I am.  Nothing will EVER change that.

I have spoken to people who wanted them to win the 1999 European Cup because it meant the cup coming back to England.  I argued I wanted Bayern Munich to take the cup home, because it was Manchester United, who cares about bringing the cup back to England, it's not like I care for any teams in England bar Liverpool.  If it's not Liverpool, the European Cup can go wherever for all I care - bar Manchester.

I wanted Everton to win the 1995 FA Cup, they were just the lesser of two evils that day, but I would take Everton over Manchester United every time.

I just don't like Manchester United.  There is an arrogant streak running right through the club, they bully other clubs, their manager........ oh i'm shutting up now before I go on all night.  Have you read my posts?  I always get bogged down talking about my hatred for Manchester United.

End on a positive - I will always support and follow Liverpool Football Club through good and bad.

There.  I feel better now having finished on that.

Have you heard of "paper over cracks"? Don't be blinded by a secondraters second rate cup! The major problems are still there.
When we've won the Premiership then I can die happy!
