Despite mounting speculation about Rafael Benitez preparing to bring a new centre half to the club, Liverpool Chief Executive Rick Parry says the club are about to offer Sami Hyypia a new contract.
Parry confirmed the Reds interest in bringing a new defender to Anfield as Liverpool need a big squad to cope with the amount of matches they are scheduled to play this season.

Parry said: "We will be talking to Sami about a new deal.

"We're interested in bringing at least one more centre-half to the club because Sami and Jamie can't be expected to play 50 games every season without any back-up."

Excellent news. Still an excellent centre-half on his day, and even if he isn't starting every match he is a great player to have as back-up.

Good, he might not have the pace but he adds a threat from set pieces and can still read the game. One of our best players in last seasons European campaign in my opinion.

i think he is a very good player and we could still use him when the others are tired (say, if milito comes to liverpool)
hardly anyone can beat him in the air

I don't see any wrong in starting a new topic about confirmed contract extensions for individual players as long as there is a healthy discussion going on.

I'm very happy with the fact that Sami is being offered a new deal but i reckon that he is getting slower with age. We badly need backup for him and even for Carragher, who has figured in almost every match last season.

He deserves a new contract but not a starting 11 place. If we buy a CB that will lower the amount of games he is going to play. He was solid in the Champions League but in the Premiership he's lack of pace gets easily exposed but still would be a good back up.

Its great news, while Sami is in his twilight of his career, he still has a lot to offer with class and experience. While i hope we do sign a quality CD before the season starts, i dont see that as the end of Sami just better competition for places
