A good signing and definately the type who can improve the overall squad quality.
It will be interesting to see where Rafa chooses to use him, him and Riise down the left could be a very useful combination.

he is a good signing......can play down the left and centre too.

great set of business by rafa..

i get the feeling rafa has already signed a player for a lot of money (more than 10 million pounds).  So that is why he is wheeling and dealing.

Kewell better get his act up now....else he won't get a look in.

Bad move for Bolo but Boro will be ok Jul 9 2005

By Evening Gazette

When Rafael Benitez announced that Liverpool had signed "the best Boro player of last year" I almost choked on my cornflakes at the thought of Boateng skipping across to Anfield.

But I soon realised that it was only the completion of the worst kept secret in football, and Zenden signing for Liverpool that he was actually talking about.

So Bolo's gone to Anfield then, and the brighter and more lucrative pastures of Liverpool?

Of course it had nothing to do with the money, it will be all about ambition, playing in the Champions League and the history of Liverpool FC.

Well, Bolo, I'm sure you will make the team for the first game at Total Network Solutions, as Liverpool begin the defence of the trophy they won in May.

In fact, I heard that Anfield's tired old theme tune, the morbid and dirge like "You'll Never Walk Alone" is to be replaced with "The Great Escape", such was the shock in the football world at the way in which Liverpool stole the title of Champions League winners.

The problem with Zenden and other stars who have taken the well trodden path from Boro to supposedly more glamorous clubs, is that it most often doesn't work out for them.

Take Ziege for example. His move turned into a personal nightmare for him.

Zenden has stated recently that he wants to regain his place in the Dutch team for next year's World Cup, but he will find it hard to do that warming the bench at Anfield.

Zenden will fall victim to the great Liverpool squad system game, in which players are picked for one game then rested for the next.

Players like Zenden hate it, and it was one of the major reasons stated as to why he wanted to play for Boro, when contracted to Chelsea.

Zenden has also enjoyed star status here on Teesside, something which he will be forgoing at Anfield.

However much Zenden sees himself as a central midfield player at Boro, and a position he clearly enjoys and excels at, Benitez will almost certainly be using him as a left sided player, an area Liverpool are weak in.

We can and should expect players like Zenden to try and negotiate the best deal for themselves.

We all try to do that in our mundane jobs ourselves. I'm not angry nor surprised at Zenden's departure, and neither should other Boro fans.

After all, he didn't just sign a one year contract for nothing, there was clearly a lot of business acumen about the decision to do that. And Liverpool have got him in exactly the same way we acquired him two years ago, so nothing wrong in that. It's the modern way.

But equally, Boro fans should not worry that his departure will affect the Boro squad in any great way.

Those days are gone. We have seen players of his ilk come and go and we shall continue to do so.

Zenden simply heads a long list that started with Souness and continued through to the modern day Boro with Ravanelli, Emerson and Ziege.

Boro teams have survived and prospered, and this current Boro squad will do likewise.

LAST WORD: As somebody said this week, Bolo has gone to Liverpool to be a Wednesday player.
