Popeye - Why keep owen?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

why is liverpool keeping owen?? now we have baros and we know baros is definitely playing much better than owen. sell owen, use the cash and get a new striker and then start thinking of the league title again.

my current 1st 11 - baros and smicer up front, stevie, danny, kewell and didi in the middle and finan, jamie, sami and henchoz with chris defending.

smicer should be nowhere near the starting 11 in any position.

That's mental.  I agree that Baros is possibly playing the better of the two at the moment, but Smicer ahead of Owen is ludicrous.  If there were any serious competition for places we could maybe have rested owen (i don't think he should have a devine right to start games) but we haven't so he must play.  He will come good again soon anyway, we saw glimpses of that in the 2nd leg against levski. :p

Owen's still a quality player.
Keep Owen and get rid of Smicer. Smicer's bloody hopeless!

Im inclined to agree apart from the smicer aspect,Owens pace wont last forever and im not convinced hes as pacy as he was anyway,as for his ability to beat a man or 2 where did that go? Baros looks sharp and hungry he seems to have added some urgency to our attack more please!! If stevie Gerrard continues his rich vein of form ive a feeling we could start to see a goal glut for the rest of the season (heres hoping anyway!)

owen's lost a yard of pace due to his dodgy hamstrings. his game is more about positional awareness now. when he first came on the scene he just constantly ran at defences and no'one dared touch him.

Yes but can we still talk about him in same breath as Henry, VnR,  or is it lack of quality\service surrounding him? going back to a fee what could we really excpect for him? struggling for 20 unless it was chelsea?

pls dun misunderstand that i'm anti-owen. look at the way he score? he needs space to do so. eg. kicking a long ball for him to chase and run towards goal. how often has he receive the ball under pressure, turn and shoot or create goal scoring chances? he's always passing back to the midfield or push the ball so far back so that he can turn the defender. remember titi camara? recieve a long kick from the keeper, hold the ball under pressure, beat the defender or pass to a open player going for goal. these are qualities that a deadly striker must have. an example will be shearer. put the long ball under control with defenders presurizing him.

Can liverpool trade owen with such qualities or can owen do it? ???   ???

You must be joking about Smicer up front - He is too slow, not strong enough and afraid to tackle anyone. He does have a good touch but i don't rate Smicer any better than squad player.

As for Owen - A few people seem to believe we should let him go but i think thats crazy. The guy has had a difficult year what with injuries, his wife's accident, deliberating over a new contract + feeding on scraps in a shocking Liverpool team. The guy is still class in my eyes and given the choice between Mikey and Baros i would take the former everytime. Baros has shown enormous potential and now is the time for him to perform consistently. I hope we see the 2 playing together up front for a few years to come.

I find it amazing that anyone could welcome Owen leaving Liverpool. The job he is being asked to do at the moment is not using the strong points of his game and Henry or Van N would fare no better in the same circumstances.
Owen is not a target man and needs a tactical layout that encourages opposing defences to push forward. We just do not have the players to hold the ball in the middle third long enough to pull defenders away from Owen.
Can't you see the space that Baros is getting because Owen is being man marked by 2 or 3 men ?.I think Baros will get better and I like the lad for way in which he responded a couple of years ago when The Management had given up on him and were trying to sell him, but better than Owen ? Never!

I think everything possible should be done to keep Owen, 100 percent.  The suggestion of selling him to re-build the team is crazy, he has had to play alongside some ferking bad players over the last 2 seasons, Heskey, Diouff etc.  He needs a proven striker to help with the goals IMO. But we all have been saying that for ages, Anelka, Viduka, Kluivert, Forsell etc. Smicer.......  Oh dear me!

I wanna see strikers on last defenders shoulders, men tearing down flanks, quality balls flying in from the by-line diving headers and volleys! do you remember?(sorry dreaming again!)!!
