New players

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

The current squad is definately good enough. Unless Liverpool spend an awful lot of money in the summer on new players we will be just as bad next season. I can not really see our players all of a sudden turn into champs.

Manager: 1st priority. A new manager and coaching staff will improve the quality of the current squad. Maybe they will even introduce some tactics and offensive/defensive formation and strategy? Capello is a good option.

Central defence: 2 new players. Main attributes in new CB's pace, pace and pace. Lucio and Thuram perhaps? ( yeah dream on..., but it would have been very nice?)

Left Back: I can not remember the last time we had a decent LB. Carragher is a good tackler, but is awful technically. Clemente Rodriguez (Boca) is my preferred option.

Midfield: Players with flair, pace and creativity. Malbranque, Guinazou and Guily good alternatives.

Striker: A big strong guy to play alongside our (relatively) small players. A player that can hold up the ball and score from crosses. Ideally this player would also be quick and technically gifted. However these players are very rare in modern football. I know of Henry and Van Nistelroy. But I must admit that I can not think of any player that Liverpool might buy in this position. Viduka is the best alternative I can think of. But I must admit that I would prefer a better player than that. Alan Smith sucks and I am not sure about Cisse either. Trezeguet maybe? All these players will be very expensive though...

Also... some of our awful players must go. Cheyrou (mickey mouse), Heskey(awful), Murphy(slow motion), Smicer(injury prone), Diao(just hopeless), Biscan(clumsy)... I do not think Liverpool will be able to get more than £ 5 mio for these players put together. Maybe we even have to pay to get rid of these guys. Owen should leave for around £ 5 mio. The reason why these guys should leave is simple. We need to build a squad of winners. Some of our players are all too happy to go for 4th spot in the league and lift a carling cup every now and then. This is because they know that they will never be good enough to play for a top side and win the league, let alone CL. These players will stand up and defend Houllier since their careers are dependent on him managing Liverpool.
If football is banned in heaven. I'd rather go to hell.

one of the main concerns is that if we don't get into the champions league no'one will want to join us. it's ok saying we need to offload the trash but will anyone want them? also, hyypia, henchoz and hamann are all 30 now. we need youth as potential replacements.

all very well writing a wish list, but how realistic is it to expect these players to come? do need a clear out, however - biscan, diao, smicer, heskey - the list could go on. instead of buying several 'squad' players , we shoud buy oner ot two of real quality. pacy centre back and forward (not sure cisse is answer).

You reckon?

Your analysis doesn't suggest that.

Whenever sides allow players to grow old without covering their positions in advance you get the supporters crying out for wholesale changes. The Mancs are paying the price now for chasing strikers rather than maintaining the defence/midfield. We went the same way with Kenny when great forwards were brought in without replacements for Lawro/Hanson/Gillespie etc etc.
We need to shed a number of players, probably for nothing!, but bringing in another mob of strangers in the hope that they will gell just doesn't make sense.
There are players in the Academy who could do a job better than GHs current favourites but they've got scouse accents and will no doubt end up playing for someone else.
Houllier should not be allowed to spend another penny till he's cleared the deadwood out. The old days of new players learning the system in the reserves worked for us and is now working for Wenger. GH pays far too much for average players and then has to justify the expenditure by playing them straight away. The five year plan has now become "The Five Year Plan II" no doubt followed by "The Five Year Plan III"

I've heard things from reasonably reliable sources, as for the comment about GH not being allowed to buy until he clears out the dead weood, I've heard the board said to him: "No more new players until you sell a few old ones".  So the board agree with you.

The trouble with saying "i think this player should come to anfield" is that you run into far too many 'if's.  What if Liverpool can't afford them?  What if they don't want to go to Liverpool?  What if another club gets them before we bid?  etc.  You can't say they should come here because we need them.  If they are going to come it will be because the circumstances are all in the right place for them to come, if one is not there then they won't come.  Simple.  And no world class players are going to join a team until we can prove we are a strong team in Europe again.

Cheers

I think the minimum requirement would be to sign Steed Malbranque.

He'll come relatively cheaply, is proven in England, and he'll sort out our problems at right midfield!

I know we could do with another centre half and a proven striker, but I can't wave a magic wand and pull two such players out of a hat.

However, Malbranque is a fine player and has already stated that he'd like to come to Liverpool.

Allegedly we can leave Fulham for £4million.

Look at the Italian league. Plenty of foreign imports start off with a small to medium sized club before taking a step up to a top side (remember David Platt with Bari?). I think signing Malbranque is not that great a gamble.

we definitely need players who are PROVEN in england. people don't understand how much faster the game is here compared to other european countries. it's ok having great technical ability but if you've got pace as well then you'll be every defences nightmare. that's why henry is so awesome.
