Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby LFC #1 » Thu Jul 07, 2005 9:48 am

Xabi Alonso has fully welcomed Steven Gerrard's decision to commit his future to Liverpool Football Club and admits the mood at Melwood have visibly lifted since yesterday's sensational announcement.
Alonso is delighted that his central midfield partner will tomorrow sign a new contract with the Reds, killing off speculation once and for all that the skipper was about to call time on his Anfield career.

The Spanish playmaker revealed he and his team-mates were shell-shocked at the possibility of Gerrard leaving but insists the feel-good factor in the dressing room has now been restored.

"It is great news for everyone in Liverpool," says Xabi. "Steve is everything, a symbol for the team, and although nobody is indispensable we would have started the new campaign on the wrong foot.

"Gerrard is wanted by all and I do not believe that it was a question of money for all those involved. In the year I have been at Liverpool I have come to understand what is expected, in particular in the league.

"These last few days the team did not train with the same joy, but now I have noticed the spirit is back."

Liverpool must Kop blame for shambles

KAREN GILES July 07 2005

.
If I were a Liverpool supporter, I would be demanding Parry's head on plate this morning. In this age of unscrupulous players and double-crossing agents, there are very few individuals as genuine or as true to their word as the 25-year old Gerrard. To allow him a moment's uncertainty about his future was unforgivable. As for six weeks . . .

After the shock departure of Michael Owen last summer, it is hardly surprising Gerrard began to have misgivings about his own future. He may have inspired Liverpool to victory in the European Cup but there were times last season when Gerrard, urged into a more attacking role, looked anything but vital and influential.

Good point.
Rick Parry never seems to be in control in his dealings with players and their agents. He always seems to be caught on the back foot, reacting to situations rather than directing the outcome to the club's advantage.

I wasn't surprised when he said that he wanted to leave, however I was pleased when he changed his mind. He had a hot and cold season but he still managed to score 13 goals. He wasn't at his best last season, he was a shadow of what he was truly capable but form is temporary and class is pernament.

His exit would had brought in a lot of money however it would had been hard to buy a good quality central midfielder imo. I think he's been misguided by his agents and whatnot, he's finally decided what "Gerrard" wants to do and not what his girlfriend or his agent want to do.
