I'm a Liverpool fan and thought I'd look at what Blues fan's are saying about Gerrard. A lot of mixed views I think?
In my opinion you don't need him and he can be as much a hindrance to a team as beneficial. People only remember the good stuff he does, whilst game after game when he can play poorly nobody remembers or they blame it on his team mates. Which he also seems to be doing himself. Your team mates are not responsible for you over-hitting your 25th long pass of the game, giving the ball away yet again!! It's going to be hard seeing him fitting in alongside Lampard, who is a much better all round player. SG can sit and hold, but will he be happy doing this? Or will Frank? So one of them is not going to be used at their optimal level. The idea of using one at a time with the other on the bench is inconceivable, not to mention disruptive if it were to happen!
This may sound like sour grapes, but its not dissimilar to stuff I've posted on LFC sites for a while. His (lack of) loyalty has been a concern for some time. I realise players do not think as fans and have a right to play wherever (contract issues aside), but it his blatant lack of confirmation on his position for over a year which is galling. Then look at his attitude after the CL final, 'how can I leave after this' and heaping praise on Raffa etc. I don't believe he is being forced out and I do believe sfx have their own agenda (ie big bucks!).
It all smacks of being a bit greedy on Chelsea's part as well (no offence intended), in that a big player, albeit one they don't need, is up for sale and they have to have him. This way of thinking did not work for Real Madrid and it may well fail for Chelsea! Besides I have a feeling he'll go to Madrid anyway.
I think Jose M may well get the best out of Gerrard, but he has to realise he won't be the idol at the Bridge as he was at Anfield. This includes the club staff as well as fans. I suspect Chelsea fans may not be so forgiving of bad performances as reds fans, especially if you pay the over inflated price of £30 million plus. On that point you only have your own transfer dealings to blame for this huge fee being bandied around. Without the Roman influence over the last year or two I don't think Gerrard would have cost much more than £18 million!! But thats your cross to bear and hopefully in our favour for a change. Thats not to say that Ambramovich hasn't made the premiership far more interesting though!
I do think SG is off, probably to Spain, but you never know.
If he goes there I think he'll try and do too much on the pitch and look like a headless chicken. His lack of Latin ball skills & tricks won't endear him to the home crowd, but for a while enthusiasm will do the trick. Unless they don't win anything (again) and he'll be moping around as usual blaming everyone else whilst sfx look to sell him, and again profit hugely, to some other mug! If he goes to Chelsea, I don't think there's enough for him to do. A bit of ball watching maybe and practicing his sour/grumpy look!!. . Lampard has always looked far better than SG when they play alongside each other for England. It's easier to look great amongst mediocrity than when mixing with greatness!! It has also been noted that we (LFC) played better when he wasn't in the team (CL aside). I believe this to be due to him demanding the ball off team mates all the time and moaning when he doesn't get it. When he does have the ball more often than not he'll mess it up - the dreaded long pass: 10% success rate- this bow down to the great Steven Gerrard or I’ll leave attitude leaves other players feeling redundant and not being able to show their own skills, and it also leaves us in positions where the ball is constantly coming back at us. He is good at being in the right place at the right time in big matches, but this is not enough! He's not a team player, as his off the pitch behaviour also signifies, he's very much an individual & a selfish thinker.
Finally for you I'm not so sure if long term its a good signing at that price. If it works out then fine, if not then thats a lot of wasted and effort. Yeah you can afford it, but you can't keep doing that for ever!! Well...
Anyway if he stays now it'll be the same story all the time and it's extremely boring and disruptive. Give us £40 million and call it quits. We'll have a few new top class players and you'll have a drippy scouser!! The new players may help us to do what Gerrard couldn't and that's win the premiership!
Good luck for the new season, if we don't win it again, it'd be good to see Chelsea win the champions league. After the last two years your time has got to come!!!
