Stevie G Going? Don't Believe The Hype
Monday July 04 2005
By Philip Cornwall

Is Steven Gerrard going to leave Anfield in the next few days? Definitely.

After all, he has a home and a training ground waiting for him.

That he is leaving Liverpool to join a new club seems equally certain, judging from the headlines in every newspaper. The start of contract negotiations was swiftly followed by a couple of rumours in Spanish papers and then whoosh.

Gerrard has been unhappy at the speed with which Liverpool are moving, it is claimed, and by the lack of a firm offer.

Though he has two years left on his contract and seemed to want to know what calibre of team-mate Rafael Benitez was bringing in, the club are supposed to feel that his transfer fee could fund a rebuilding programme built around Xabi Alonso instead.

One side or another or both may be engaged in a spinning campaign to present the other as responsible for the sudden impasse. It looks, from the headlines, to be terminal, just six weeks after Gerrard lifted the European Cup.

But...a word of caution - these are incredibly quiet times in football, for a sports media who are reliant on the game for their wages.

One tabloid Sunday, biting the bullet of reality, had just one page of football news this week, cramming its pages with what was an extraordinary feast elsewhere in sport: Lions meltdown, Venus rising, a cricket thriller, a shock in the big race with Frankie Dettori missing with a broken collarbone.

In contrast, The Times has already relaunched its Monday football pull-out, well over a month before it will have a set of Premiership matches from which Tony Cascarino will draw unlikely parallels with his own career. And there is a limit to how much you can write about the Glazers now they are in charge but a ball has not been kicked.

It may well be that by the time 'The Game' has some actual football to get its teeth into Gerrard will be turning out for someone else. Or it could be that in an effort to fill space, the papers have seized on a molehill, or perhaps just another twist in the tale.

Not long ago Sir Alex Ferguson was demanding that Rio Ferdinand signed a new contract before the FA Cup Final. And still it rumbles on.

One year ago this month, the Faria Alam story broke, with some papers laying their reputations on the line with predictions that Sven-Goran Eriksson would be out within days.

The story of the affair was based on fact. But what it all meant was a million miles from the moralising Mail's certain hopes and statements.

And at times during the previous season, papers were writing, as if it were fact, that Eriksson and Gerrard would be teaming up at Stamford Bridge for 2004-05.

Maybe this time it's for real. But take Gerrard out of the papers today and what does a football-hungry media have to write about?

Don't believe everything you read in the press about what has apparently happened; believe even less of what they say will happen...

well well.mr gerrard is on the verge of leaving.is anybody surprised.i know i'am not.i've thought this was coming all season.as much respect i have for him as a player i don't like the person.i will never forget him lifting ol'big ears on that mild istanbul night in may.it was a sight for soar eyes.
but no matter how hard i try i can't get out of my mind that he thinks he is bigger then the club.all season long i have listened to people go on and on about how great a player he is,and at times he is.but there in lies the problem AT TIMES.i think back to games were if it had't been for him we would of lost to teams like olympiakos, porstmouth, but then i look at games against the big sides chelsea, arsenal manchester united and not once did he dominate a game.i have never seen him play well against the likes of veira, keane and lampard.steven did't even get in the footballers writers team of the year.he was outclassed in the final playing against kaka and pirlo until he was moved out wide against a lesser player.
don't get me wrong he is a good player and on many occasions palyed and been man of the match for us.but it's the baggage that comes with him.last year he was signed for chelsea, they had a shirt waiting for him, only his family stopped him.if they had't and he had been allowed to do what he wants he would be sat on a beach somwhere with terry and lampard thinking what might of been.he gave benitez a chance to prove to him that he could take the club forward,if not he was going to walk.everybody new that.and we thanked him for giving us that chance.us thanking him.thats not right.he along with the rest of us could never of dreamed about winning the premeirship never mind the european cup.but the big trophy did come our way.he demanded quality signings.they came our way in the shape of alonso,a cultured midfeilder and a massive talent i'am sure you will agree.garcia, second half of the year at least.carson a talented young goalkeeper who will hopefully go onto realise that talent, and morientes who puts our trophy cabinet to shame, the best striker in europe last year and who will definatly be sharper next year.
all this gerrard demanded from a club who he clearly saw as not good enough to be employing steven gerrard.up until febuary he was still openly saying in the press that he would reveiw the "situation" at the end of the season.all those demands he has been throwing around i beleive have been more then met.he has demanded to win trophys, like he has a devine right.the only one missing from his impressive cabinet is the league.give rafa the chance.that could only be a short period away.
"how can i leave after a night like this" were the words he said on the pitch after lifting the trophy.he also said "we will sit down and see what happens".never in that interview did he or any interveiws thereafter that he wanted to sign a new contract at liverpool.those words never left his lips.i beleive at the root of all this is that steven wants to leave the club, and that he has wanted to for some time now.this is all being enginered to reflect bad on liverpool.sfx, his agents were the people behind the shady deals of rio ferdinand, david beckham and wayne rooney.they know what there doing and if they want something to happen, innevitably it does.
so steven, you want to go play for real or chelsea.know this, real are a bunch of alice band wearing show ponys with not much selve life left.raul, ronaldo, zidane, beckham and the rest of them cant hold a torch to the likes of kaka, adriano and cristano ronaldo.and mark my words as they wont be much of a team with one "galactico" a year.they rely on one person a year to win them trophys, and we all know that does't work, just ask jamie carragher.and as sure as light is day you will be moved on and shipped out as soon as your shelve life is over.maybe you could get a game for bolton with campo, heiro and figo.then comes chelsea.the team with less history then there owner.you may want to sell your soul for gold or black gold, but you will never get a club that will look atfer someone like liverpool has looked after steven gerrard.
and remember this liverpool football club have won 5 european cups.steven gerrard has't.

The worry is if Stevie does leave - how will it affect the squads morale. When he got injured last season we seemed lost. Whatever happens we have to learn how to survive as a team not a team relying on their captain when the going gets tough

seems that we are going to have to wait a few more days before an official word on the Gerrard situation, Really can't stand waiting much longer tbh, wish it was all over.

However, I suppose until he signs with another club officailly he is still a Liverpool player and until he offcially leaves then the club can't really say much can they ???

i've said it before and i'll say it again.

long term, rafa wants us to play a 4-2-3-1 system. gerrard doesn't fit into this system, simple as. morientes is already earmarked to play just off a lone striker in my opinion.

                                    cisse

       kewell                  morientes                 garcia

                        hamann           alonso

Wow go to a meeting for a couple of hours and this thread explodes!!

If he goes, then i'll always believe he did it for the best reasons, mainly unkown by us (fans) and i'll never bear anomosity towards him, but if he goes to manu or chealski i will need a fews days to cool down.

Rafa had to make his transfer funds this summer it seems ,and with this ongoing saga surrounding SG ,and how its unsettling the squad he has obviously had enough.
SG parasite of fu*king agent as instigated this i feel ,but what can you do.
This is sh!t news but im clinging onto to hope that Stevie and LFC will try to sort it out again.Who knows.

Examples of why we shouldnt be worried.

1) Gaizaka Medieta was the SG of Valencia. RB sold him and won La Liga 2 years in a row after.

2) Z Zidane left Juventus and they won the league around 3 times after that.

Everyone will miss him to bits but the fact remains that we can still win things. We won the amny games, many important games this season without him. And im sure under RB we will continue to do so.
My new blog for my upcoming holiday.

this is the problem though we are basing our views on reports.

From waht I have read I am of the opinion that Stevie G isn't happy and wants a larger salary which the club can't offer. Their is also the issue of the player's agent who works for SFX, manipulating Stevie G into believing the club no longer wants him, and this is where the papers have got their info from.

Immediatley after Istanbul, Rafa and St4evie seemd so close, Rafa said that Stevie was amazing and I coudln't see any reason for their to be any animosity between the two.

I think SFX have caused a misunderstanding between both parties as they stand to make a large sum if Stevie is sold the money grabbing :censored:!

If gerrard plays against TNS he'll be stayin but if he doesnt he'll be going.I hope he does play and that he isn't going he's still 1 of the worlds best midfielders and is our best player. And a don't think 35 million in enough for him he's worth much more than that is he not? ???
