Our history - Which result would you change?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

This should be an interesting topic.

If you could change one result in lfc's history, which one would it be? I am talking about on the pitch here obviously, as we would all want to change other tragic off the field events for obvious reasons. However which result do you look back on now and think "if only". Which disappointment made you the most gutted as a fan?

As successful as we have been, there have been several disappointments. For me, the Arsenal game in 1989 was the biggest low point. I just remember crying in my room for the best part of two days after that. Wimbledon in 88 and Manure in 96 at Wembley also spring to mind because we played so poorly in both games.

Which result would you change from our illustrious history if you could? It would be interesting to hear the views of the different generations of fans in here because we are all from different eras.

And don't any of you say you would have changed Istanbul so that we won 6-0. :D

Probably the new years day(?) defeat to Man U in '97, as we were coasting at the top, then that fooked our title challenge, and we went on to lose other games such as 3-0 to Blackburn, etc. We went what seemed like ages without a defeat. Bast*rds.

Losing to celtic in the uefa a few years ago

Made worse by the fact that I was watching the game in Scotland surrounded by celtic fans

Had to endure a hell of a slagging that night

Before I even opened this topic and as I was readng the title of the topic, first game that popped into my head was the 1989 Liverpool vs Arsenal game.

Game and topic over.  No other game comes close for me.

And I've even read Fever Pitch.  We all would have been spared that pile of Barry White.

others i'd wish to mention.

the 4-3 defeat to palace in the 1990 fa cup semi. we'd already beaten them 9-0 in the league ffs

the 2-1 defeat at old trafford in the fa cup in 99. 1-0 up with a minute to go and lost 2-1 (where have i heard that before?)

The one that springs to mind from recent history would be the result at Middlesborough season before last, we where top of the league and unbeaten at the time, that loss really affected our confidence and it was seriously all down hill from that point. I am not exaggerating when I say that that loss affected the players for the resat of the season. We played well in the game and Southgate scored late on to nick it. We where playing some good football and where 12 games into the season unbeaten at the time. A different result there and I seriously think we would have challanged. As it happens, that started a long run of bad results which became the worst since the 50's, and the manager later at the end of the season lost his job.

The Arsenal game is obviously one from the end of the 80's early nineties era. Everyone associted with the club cried then!

I also remember travelling to Bradford away when Paul Jewell was the manager there. We needed to better the result that Leeds United managed on the last day to get into the Champions League. We lost to Bradford who stayed up, Weatherall scored the winner if I remember correctly. Leeds lost too, so a win at lowly Bradford would have won us the game and the lucrative Champions League place. I think that would have been our first time in it, and lord only knows what might have happened if we had that cash injection at that particular time.
JUSTICE FOR THE 96

For me it has to be getting beat in the 1977 FA Cup final by the mancs. It was the first cup final I attended I was 16 years old and I was devastated. We had already been crowned champions, and a European cup final the following Wednesday awaited us.I still look away if the goals are replayed on tv.Fortunately I was in Rome 5 days later to see us lift the big one.

If I was older that would probably be it, we'd have won the treble and haven't managed it yet.

In my lifetime nothing comes close to the Michael Thomas goal at Anfield in 1989.

That was the single most disappointing moment in my sporting life.

I think the whole world wanted us to win the Double after Hillsborough.......that game was the single biggest kick in the teeth the club has ever had, in my opinion (from a sporting point of view).

The quarter final of the FA Cup 1989. Lose that one and not go to Hillsborough
