Every good team has a holding midfielder - think viera, makalele etc. It's great in Europe and for our relatively slow defence, Didi provides cover.

Hamman and Hyppia have been my fav players throughout the GH era - they are never outspoken and just do the job. Great post.

My mum told me that behind every good man there's a good woman.  Maybe so, and it's also true that behind every Steven Gerrard there's a Deitmar Hamann.

Two or three seasons ago Sky came up with stats for how Liverpool perform with Hamman and without him.  We did much better WITH him and I reckon that is probably still true.

Thanks for staying Didi, the future looks brighter now you've signed.

The man's a class act on and off the pitch. Can you imagine any other senior player for any club not starting in a CL final and not kicking up a fuss.

On top of that he signs a new deal. Definately a legend.

You have to admire Hamann and what he's achieved at Liverpool since his arrival.Never once has he let us down and has been a model professional.

I would love to see a team that would accommodate Didi, Xavi & Stevie in the midfield as it would be unbeatable with everyone bringing something different to the team.

In 2002 Houllier took off Hamann in the 1/4 final of the champions league against Leverkusen when we were in a comfortable position.  After Hamanns substitution we collapsed.  Compare that to this years final when he came on and changed the game.

In 2001/02 our season got off to a flyer.  We had a comfortable lead at the top of the table when Hamann got sent off at anfield against Sunderland (Fowlers last game).  Subsequently, he got injured and we hardly won a game for the next six weeks while he was out injured.  By the time he returned our title challenge had ran out of steam.

In the modern game the holding midfield role is probabaly the most important position in any team.  Makalele was instrumental in helping Chelski win the league.  Madrid have crumbles because they overlooked the importance of the position.  Gattuso does the job at Milan.  In recent years fergie has put his top man, Keane sitting in front of his back four at United to cut out danger.  I reckon Newcastle have done well to sign Parker and he'll fit he position for them.

Didi has been tremendous for us and thankfully he wil stay on next year but who is capable of stepping into his boots long term ?
