I used to live near one of those old school chippys that served chips in newspaper. Used to be any old bit of newspaper, but after a while I noticed that it was always The Star.
Turns out that the newsagent next door, where I did a paper round at the time, was taking back-handers from the newspaper distributors, and was being given extra copies of The Sun and The Star for free in the year after Hillsborough so they could try and fiddle the circulation figures. Instead of spending hundreds each day to stock those papers like he used to do, he was already in profit before he'd even opened up each day.
So, he'd bank the money, his son would ritually pi*s on the stack of Suns and set fire to them (every morning at 6am there was a cloud of black smoke over the back of his shop), and he gave all of the Stars to the chippy.
Really nice postscript to that story is that the guy bought a terminally ill LFC fan from my street a season ticket using the shady money. The girl, Lisa, I think her name was, died the week after she went to her first and only non-Anfield LFC match - the '92 FA Cup Final. He also bought my old primary school a room full of computers and a new football kit, and he also made a point of sending regular contributions to the Hillsborough fund. For a time he bussed a group of old war veterans to my old local every Sunday afternoon so they could have a day out of the old folk's home, and he'd have a stack of cash behind the bar so they didn't have to pay a penny.
He took a lot of stick for taking the money at all, but he was so selfless with it that people couldn't fail to see the funny side. Best of all was when he told me that he always used to take a tenner out of whatever money he was getting, wipe his
on it, and then mail it anonymously to Kelvin McKenzie at The Sun.
The distributors didn't find out what was happening for about 5 years.
