since this is my 2000 post i thought i would reflect on the last 38 years as a red.

i was born 22nd February 1967 at Mill Road Hospital in Liverpool, born into a family of Liverpudlians. in fact my sister was born 1st May 1965, the day the mighty reds won their first FA cup, my dad missed the birth as he was at wembley. when he went to the hospital when he got back my mum said ' heres your daughter'. his reply was 'yes, but we won the cup'.

so there was only one club for me. i went to my first game age 6, in 1973, i was taken on the Kop and had a fantastic time. lets look at what we have won while ive supported the reds.

European Super Cup Winners

and numerous other minor trophies.

i have so many heroes its difficult to mention them all, in fact nearly every player who has pulled on that red shirt has been a hero to me, smith, hughes, souness, case, kennedy (ray and alan) Barnes, beardsley, rush and the best of then all dalglish. i was fortuante to be growing up in a time when these legends roamed the earth. ive seen dalglish do things that take your breath away, ive seen smith do chest high tackles one minute and then play the most sublime pass the next. ive seen rush leave defenders in his wake on his way to another goal, ive seen barnes weave his magic, ive seen folwer astound everyone with his finishing.

ive walked into anfield for a night match for the first time and had my breath taken away by the sheer excitment of floodlit football, here was 50,000 people in their own little cocoon, all there for the same reason. the smell of cigars, the smell of the grass, the smell of the food, the smell of the wintergreen, the comments made by individuals, the songs, the chants. i took my 25 stone mate from northern ireland to his first game at anfield and watched him cry when we sung you'll never walk alone'. so many good memories.

but also the bad times, i was not as hislborough as i had to work, i was a policeman at the time in liverpool, i started my shift at 3pm, not long after we all stood in the tv room in total shock at what we were seeing. the sunday morning i was at anfield, i saw an old guy on the kop crying, the guy was inconsolable. i went to him and held him, no words needed to be exchanged. as days went on i was ashamed to be a policeman as the evidence started to mount, but i looked at some of my senior officers and how incapable they were and everything made sense to me. every year at 3.06 wherever i am in the world i have to be alone with my thoughts. to the 96 R.I.P  Y.N.W.A  i hope you were all looking down on 25th May 2005 when the reds became a respected force again.

the barren 90's have been hell for me, i grew up on success and that was taken away, it was confusing what happend to my club, christ i used to go to the game as a kid with my liverpool kit under my clothes in case we were a player short, thats what they mean to me, and now we were doing nothing. it was hard but unlike the new supporters i had my memories, they really are too many to mention here and i could go on for hours, but maybe i will give snippets in other posts.

and so it was i moved to malaysia in 2002, i see the games on TV, thats nothing special. i say to people until you have been there and experienced anfield, the sights, sounds and smells then you havent lived. i know some of you live miles away but make a big effort to go at least once, it will be the best day of your life.
