Beardsley, how good was he? I've heard rumours and seen video clips, i saw him towards the end of his career for Newcastle and always thought the lad looked a class act. His turn's away from people and shimmey's were superb, but i never got a proper feel for how he played, what he was like or how good he actually was.

I was listening to fella's the other day in the pub talking about him and Dalglish being similar players, i wasn't fortunate enough, (i supose thats the word if its unfortunate am not an old **** :D ) to watch either player at there best, just wanted to hear opinions on the two and what they brought to the side.

I had my one and only ever season ticket in 1987/88 when Beardo played for us and King Kenny was the manager.  Paid a British transfer record of £1.9 million for him at the time, and he was worth every penny in my opinion.  I've read his book, and my mate had his video years ago and some of the goals he used to score were breathtaking.  The lad could do anything.

He started out with Carlisle, had a trial with Manchester Buccaneers (if I'm not mistaken, Big Fat Ron didn't like the look of him (pun not intended) and let him go).

He then went to Vancouver Whitecaps where he was a fuc*ing star.

When he went to Newcastle, he was part of the ugliest forward line in history, lining up alongside Joe Allon.

But he could play.  When he came to us, I was only 8 years old so I only yhave sporadic memories of him, but he was one hell of a player.  I've seen the DVD's.

Softshite Souness sold him when he was nearing veteran stage to the Blueshites, where he became one of a handful of players to sore in a Merseyside derby for both Everton and Liverpool.  When he hit the twilight of his career, he helped Andy Cole score 41 goals in all competitions for Newcastle United.

So how many managers wrote Beardo off too early then.

Fuc*ing class player.  End of.

My favourite Liverpool player. Sheer class - superb passing, blistering runs and an enviable amount of goals/assists.

Daglish? Speaks for itself.

Beardsley deserves more credit than he ever got. An absolute cracker of a player. His skill and vision was immense. One of those timeless players like Gianfranco Zola who played superbly well into his 30s.

Could play with either foot, could curl the ball superbly, and the phrase "turn on a six pence" was never as apt.

Like John Barnes, Steve McMahon and a couple of other Liverpool players, he never really did it for England.

Is also a legend up in Newcastle.

Don't really remember Dalglish 1st hand but Beardo was a superstar that left us to soon in my opinion. Having watched alot of footage of Dalglish though i'd have to say they were very similar in style.

Would have loved to have seen King Kenny in the flesh. :bowdown

Agree JBG he never did it for England, but every time I hear his name I always remeber a goal he scored for ENGLAND!!  Swerved (not curled, for those that think they are one in the same !) the ball almost top corner near post with his right foot from the right hand side of the box, great goal, cant remember the opposition, but the game was at Wembly, always remember that goal, I had the England kit that year too!!!  Ahhhh, memories !!!  :)

Saw him play in the flesh a fair few times and yes, he was just pure class. Had such vision and a knack of reading the game that his lack of pace never really mattered. A privilege to watch

It was against Poland in a Euro 92 qualifier.

I agree -Beardsley was then ,,as good as Henry is now .Not as fast but .I think he did ok for England -Lineker always wanted him as a partner. But what a signing he was along with Barnes and Aldridge.... as for King Kenny  :bowdown  I dont believe Ive seen a better British Player ,he didnt have blistering pace but he wasnt slow, he was razor sharp,he had a rocket shot, great vision, could hold it up, he could turn, he was strong as an ox he was just THE MAN!! In the 1979 charity shield 3-1 win over arsenal he was  :bowdown

beardsley was a cracker of a player,a perfect foil for both barnes and aldridge. he played in what was probably the most attacking and adventurous team liverpool have ever had,he was very similar to dalglish in is style of play, but kenny was a class above in every department.

Beardsley was fantastic, very quick feet. Funny how Kenny went off him after a couple of seasons, began to drop him for a lot of games - never understood that. Anybody got any clue why.

Was also class at Everton and Newcastle after he left us. Utter madness to sell him considering the :censored: players Souness brought in instead (was it Mark Walters or Nigel Clough that replaced him?)

Rumour had it that Beardsley had a lash at King Kenny's missus!  :D

I don't know which is worse: one of your players having a crack at your wife or the particular player being Peter Beardsley!

I never really believed the rumours but like the Henchoz/Hyppia rumour last year, that was what people were saying at the time.

I can bareley believe Beardo scoring with his own wife never mind somebody else's.

I think a sign of his class was that I don't think anybody at LFC wished anything but good luck to him when he crossed over to the blues.

Who else could get away with that (Bar Ablett  )

Can only echo all thats been said above. A superb player ,perhaps not  in the same class as Dalgliesh but not far off it. Although not the quickest of players he could shift when he needed too. Never understood why he was let go .
