HERO DIDI TO SIGN ONE YEAR DEAL
Press Report 29 May 2005

Didi Hamann, the hero of Istanbul, will sign a one-year deal with Liverpool following a surprise U-turn.

German midfielder Hamann as due to quit the Kop and switch to Bolton after being forced out of Rafael Benitez's first-team plans.

But his 'farewell' Liverpool appearance in Wednesday's unforgettable Champions League final has prompted a change of heart by both the player and the club. Hamann changed the game when he came on as sub, reminding Liverpool manager Benitez of his quality.

Now the former Newcastle star has been offered a one-season deal and has decided to take it.

Hamann knows it will be tough to win back his first team place at the heart of a midfield now dominated by Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso. But his performance at the Ataturk Stadium convinced him he still has plenty to offer the new European champions.

Hamann will announce over the next few days that he is staying at Anfield.

Good to hear, I'm glad we can reward him w/ a new extension, even though it's just a year.

great news, Didi will be useful next season and will allow us to rest midfielders in less important games.  :)

Great news , really was dreading Didi leaving . He has got to be one of the most under rated players in the EPL

Excellent news. Think he would be sorely missed if he left now, rarely puts a foot wrong, scores the odd piledriver and an excellent influence on the park

i`d be tempted to play three in the middle and one up front.
though i`ve often thought under houllier he was too negative under benitez he brings the best out of xavi and stevie. some of our best performances last season like arsenal and everton at home where with three in the middle. for him to accept a one year deal at his age and with his star shining so bright at the moment is a risk on his behalf and also shows how commited he is to the club. his major part in the miraculous comeback on wednesday assures him of legendary status at this club and i dont think there`s a higher accolade in the game than that.

Glad to hear that Didi is staying, he single handidly turned the game around by keeping Kaka quiet.

Brilliant :)
He is old but he is not easy to replace, defensive midfielders are harder to get hold of now.

absolutely DELIGHTED, he's been a first-class servant to the club and is easily good enough to give us another season at his best  :bowdown

Hamann is class. Thank God hes staying on a while longer. No pace and limited in terms of goals but he sets a tempo and is an immaculate passer of a ball. Breaks up opposition moves and is so clever on the park. Makes it look easy. More of the same please  :)

A VERY importnat player to Liverpool FC and not just becuase of the way his introduction helped turn the tide last Wednesday. Dietmar is one of those unsung heroes most teams have and the fact that we have sucha  quality player in our squad for next season bodes well for LFC .......:)

Good move for the depth of the squad. I'm glad Rafa is going after both stars and footballers who do the little things to help a team win.
