Fenerbahce striker Nicolas Anelka admits he would love to return to Liverpool one day.
The Frenchman watched on as Rafa Benitez's side enjoyed UEFA Champions League glory in Istanbul, knowing he could have been part of the squad that was celebrating an historic win.
The Merseysiders targeted Anelka, who had a loan spell with the club in 2001/2002 when he scored four Premiership goals, in January but ended up snaring Real Madrid's Fernando Morientes, who was cup-tied in Europe.
Anelka left Manchester City for Fenerbahce instead but has regrets that the initial loan deal was not made into a permanent move and also that a transfer could not be brokered this year.
"When I was there, I wanted to stay," said the 26-year-old. "But it could not be settled.
"Last winter, when I was at Manchester City, there was contact with Liverpool.
"If I could have gone, I would have not said 'no'.
"But I have to accept it.
"I am not taking the decision for reinforcements there.
"The Liverpool fans would like me to come back.
"It is a club I really loved.
"I would like to go back one day."
