ST. MIKE'S RUMOUR THREAD - All silly season rumours here please

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Scottbot » Fri May 20, 2005 9:57 pm

Peter Crouch....Gary O'neil....Dirk Kuyt & thats just for starters. Silly season is here. The press are starved of the constant rumour mongering since the transfer window was introduced but they more than make up for it in the summer.

I've still got the feeling we will go out and sign johnson from Palace. If not, have got a sneaky suspicion Rafa may re-ignite his interest in Anelka.

Scottbot I don't agree about Rafa going for Anelka, he is a selfish player. He signed with Fenerbache(or was it Galatasaray? can't remember who he signed with) just for money and if they don't win anything by the year 2006 I believe, then he has the right to leave based on his contract.

I wouldn't want that sort of player at our club, Rafa looks  for a player with skill and good mentality whilst Anelka has skill he certainly doesn't have the right attitude.

Agree that he is probably not the best personaility to have in the dressing room judging by what the press have to say about him over the years - Although i cannot recall ever hearing one of his former team-mates actually coming out and saying a bad word about the lad.

I know there hasn't been any speculation but Rafa did express an interest in the player publicly at the turn of the year. I'm pretty sure we would have signed him if the Morientes deal hadn't worked out.

I have a very high opinion of the player in terms of the talent he possesses - lighting pace, great touch, beats players, provider and goal scorer.

While i remain optimistic that Morientes will come good with a full pre-season under his belt there is no doubt in my mind that Anelka's goals (had we signed him) would have leapfrogged us above everton with time to spare.

no need to be smug Luke. Have you conveniently forgotten Anelka's situation that season was remarkably similar to Morientes this year. He arrived more than half-way through the season and was way short of match fitness + he was 3rd choice most of the time. Ask an lfc fan at that time whether they would like the club to sign Anelka and i'm pretty sure the majority would have said yes.

If your telling me you don't rate Anelka as a player then i guess you no less about football than i thought previously.

I'm not saying Anelka would have been a better signing than Morientes. I would have been happy with either player but favoured Morientes just slightly. But I do believe the fact he was match fit and fully acclimatised (and proven) in English football may have benefited us in the shorter term.

I'm also saying he's a bloody good player whatever anybody assumes to know (and lets face it, it's nothing more than an assumtion) about his personality and detrimental effect on team spirit.

New rumour

From TalkLFC.com

Belgian television channel VTM claims Liverpool have offered French midfielder Anthony LeTallec to this year's runners up RSC Anderlecht.

The Brussels based club is the current employer of much touted defender Vincent Kompany, who was recently named player of the year in the Jupiler league. Anderlecht also play their matches at the Constant van der Stock stadium which is better known to Liverpool fans as Heysel stadium.

Whether Liverpool's offer has anything to do with a move for Kompany has not been stated but it is well known that a number of clubs are looking to lure the player away from the Belgian capital.

Among them are Chelsea, Arsenal, Barcelona and Manchester United but rumours a few weeks ago suggested that Liverpool were also among the clubs interested. Kompany himself has not spoken about a preference for any club and is keeping his options open.

The player's contract runs out in June 2008 and has already stated that he may stay with Anderlecht for one more year.

Former Liverpool target Rafael van der Vaart has agreed terms on a move from Dutch record champions Ajax to German side Hamburger SV.

The bundesliga club invited the player to have a look around their stadium and accomodations a few weeks ago, when it became clear the player did not intend on staying in the Dutch capital. Van der Vaart was long rumoured to be a transfer target for Liverpool while Gerard Houllier was still in charge.

When he became available current Liverpool chief Rafael Benitez did not express an interest however.

The Dutch playmaker shot to fame two years ago when Ajax were beaten in the Champions League quarter final by AC Milan in the dying seconds of the game. The Italians then went on to win the tournament.

His departure may kickstart an exodus from the Amsterdam Arena with Steven Pienaar, Maxwell, Wesley Sneijder and Hatem Trabelsi all tipped to be heading for pastures new. It is unlikely that Liverpool will register an interest in any of them as Benitez continues to look at La Liga as his main fishing pond for new players.

Was only kidding.

But I do think that Anelka is slightly overated, but he is good player, his first touch in not that good and he don't set many goals up like you said, ultimately he is a goalscorer, Cisse is simlar and should at least reach that level when he has aclimatised.

I thought he moved to Deportivo in January on a perment basis and signed a long contract, and I'm quiet sure I read or heard that he is very happy there. It is unlikely that he will move 5 months later as he is a first teamer there.

My guess is an old story, being recirculated.

That's true he signed in January but Deportivo have been poor this season and probably won't be playing in Europe next season. Rafa could persuede him to join us as he did with Alonso and Garcia.

More rumours.

From the Guardian
"Rafael Benítez will continue to reshape his Liverpool squad by moving to sign the England international Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich this summer, reviving the midfielder's hopes of featuring in next year's World Cup finals in the process.
The two clubs are close to agreeing a £2.5m deal for the 24-year-old, who won his 25th cap in the 4-0 trouncing of Northern Ireland at Old Trafford at the end of March. Hargreaves is on £45,000 a week, which Liverpool would be prepared to match, and has a year left on his contract. "
