HAS IT SUNK IN YET?
Can you believe that 2 weeks today we'll be battling with AC Milan to lift the European Cup? We, LIVERPOOL, great underachievers of recent seasons will be battling with arguably the best side in Europe for the the biggest club trophy in world football. And what's more, Milan will be as daunted by the prospect of facing us as we may be by facing them. Sounds good, doesn't it?
When I joined this forum just over a year ago there were dissenting voices leaft, right and centre. Frustration with GH and the state of the club as a whole was probably the thing that prompted me most to join in the first place, to vent my spleen and to guage how other supporters felt about what a mess our great club appeared to be in.
Now, 14 months later with a new manager but fairly little new blood, after a season of ridiculous injury problems and constant rumours that our captain was going to follow Michael Owen out of the door, we find ourselves staring a European cup final in the face. And neither, Mr Wenger, have we done it the easy way, having knocked out 2 of the best sides in Europe as well as a very capable Leverkusen.
To say that we have got here courtesy of luck is just plain nonsense.
This season has obviously been frustrating in the extreme, what with our constant mis-firing in the premiership and never-ending injury list, but it is in the CL that Rafa's tactical mastery has really shone, outfoxing the likes of Fabio Capello and Jose Mourinho on the way. To get to the final is an exceptional achievement, and would be for any team
I've calmed down from the hysteria and elation of last week and thought it had all sunk in about what we were about to do. Or at least I thought it had.
I've just had my diary out for w/c 23rd May and was blanking out the evening of the 25th with "Liverpool AC Milan, CL Final" when once again the magnitude of it all hit me and I still can't quite believe we're going to Istanbul. I almost have to pinch myself sometimes!
But we ARE going to Istanbul and we have done it the HARD WAY
For that we should be the proudest fans in the world 2 weeks today
Walk on.....
