Reds should not be in final

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby gabbyh » Sat May 07, 2005 1:57 pm

Arsene thinks only Championship winners should be in the Champion League? Liverpool won it 4 times when only Champions of their leagues were allowed to participate. It was a knockout competition, not a league as now,and there was no resting on your laurels. Now, you can lose in the group stage, but still win the cup, whereas in the past, if you lost a leg, it was an uphill struggle to win the tie.
Arsene is aptly named because he is talking out of his.
As much as it annoys me, Everton must be allowed their chance to play in the CL, maybe it will show them that 4th place does not always a CL winner make when experience of European football is limited. (ie fans, manager and board)

azriahmad wrote:If I recall correctly, the expanded format of the CL as it is today was a result of bowing to the threat of a break-away super league from the so-called elite teams like the Milans (both Inter and AC), Juve, Bayern, Barca, Real Madrid, Mancs and also Arsenal so that the respective league champions and the other 'glamour' teams who did not quite finish as league champions get to compete in a hyped-up club tournament which promises much more riches to all of the participants.

To some extent the competition has been devalued by the inclusion of non-Champions but all the while the other non-Champions have accepted the competition format because it is so lucrative. This includes Arsenal, who have also competed in the past an non-Champions and will still do so in the next season as a non-Champion of England. What is he ranting on about, then?

Is it the fact that Arsenal and himself has been found so wanting at this stage? They play beautiful football most of the time - this is a fact - but they have failed miserably even against modest opposition. Wenger should thank his lucky stars that Arsenal did not have to face Barcelona or AC Milan in the knock-out stage because Arsenal and their weak defence would be in for a gigantic whopping which would really highlight the real weakness of Arsenal - over reliance on the left sided attacking play and particular one Theiry Henry, very weak defence and mostly, tactical shortcomings as they have no other alternative to effective playing other than through Henry.

Teams like Liverpool and Chelsea have displayed the ability to have alternative style of play depending on the opposition to get the necessary results. This is what it takes to excel in Europe and he should pipe down and start to concentrate on improving Arsenal's playing style in Europe.

yes...yes..and yes...

Champions league is meant to be only for the winners of the respective leagues...and arsenal has qualified for it quite a few times as the runners-up....So whats his problem ? Spain & Italy gets 4 places too.... If it wasn't for our uefa cup 2001 win, england will still have only 3 places.

W*nk...er also better not talk too much.  What makes him think arsenal is gonna be in the top 3 or 4 next season ? The other teams are improving their squad (spurs, boro..etc). Arsenal could be fighting for a uefa cup next season  :rasp

He is a great manager and all, but i lost respect for him when he mentioned in 2001 (when we won the treble), it is better to finish 3rd and qualify for champions league than winning the domestic cups  :O .......

May: Shut Up, Arsene by Gerry

I wasn’t the slightest bit surprised that those dickheads at the FA have done us no favours by deciding to stick with their rule of the top 4 PL teams going through to next years CL, even if Liverpool win this years competition. How embarrassing for them that an article on their website since last year has turned up stating that had Arsenal or Chelski won last seasons CL but finished outside the top 4 then they would be have been entered into this seasons competition and the fourth place team would be entered into the UEFA cup. Of course this article has now been removed from their website but the damage has been done and it shows them up for the bunch of corrupt, two faced ****** they truly are. Why don’t they just come out and say, “ In all circumstances our rules will be strictly adhered to, unless of course they happen to adversely affect the mancs, the Gooners or Chelski in which case they are subject to change”.

If we win the Champions League and finish outside the top 4, I’ve always felt our best chance of getting into next years competition lies with UEFA. When it comes to corruption and bending rules, UEFA makes the FA look like a bunch of choir boys. I’m sure if we were Champions they would find a way to squeeze us into next years competition even if it meant us going through the qualifying phase at the expense of some East European makeweight. The FA think everything revolves around the “Holy Trinity” but UEFA are all about money and Liverpool as Champions would be a big draw.

The moaning bitter ****** manager of the Gooners, Arsene ****** has also been sticking his nose into the subject and showing himself up for the dickhead we all know him to be. He says he agrees with the FA that the top 4 in the PL should qualify for next years competition and then he goes on to say that Liverpool are lucky to be in the competition. Why is that then Arsene, did we not finish in the top 4 last season? He then says that as the competition is called the Champions League, only the league champions should qualify. That being the case Arsene, if Liverpool win the Champions “League” aren’t they more entitled to be in the competition then your bunch of also-rans? We all know that if the Gooners were in our position then Arsene would soon change his tune and be screaming like the bitch that he is. Stick to pizza throwing Arsene and keep your ****** mouth shut because the way things are going its your lot who could well be struggling to get 4th next season.I hope Rafa pins Arsene’s comments up on the dressing room wall on Sunday it should help to fire the lads up.

I see Jose Mourinho got himself a nice new five year contract with Chelski. He will now be earning £7.5 million a year making him the top earning manager followed by whiskey nose on £6m, Ericson on £5.8m, ****** on £4.4m and our own Rafa is somewhere down the list on £2.4m. I know it’s still a lot of money but if we manage to win the CL, I hope the club give Rafa a new deal and show him he’s as valued by our club as his rivals are valued by their.

After watching yet another great CL performance in our semi-final win over Chelski its difficult to believe that we are 5th in the league and 33 points behind the leaders. We know we have the right manager but we don’t seem to have enough of the right players. I know we’ve had dreadful luck with injuries yet we’ve still managed to perform in Europe whereas some of our league form has been really dreadful. There’s not a lot coming out of the Academy either. Although some of them did well when given a chance, there was no one particularly outstanding and the performances of the reserves this season haven’t been inspiring. We badly need a clearing out of the deadwood and a lot of new blood brought in by Rafa in the Summer. Depending on who we get rid of, I reckon we could need at least six or seven good quality players brought in at LB, CB, RM, CM, LM plus another option upfront and maybe a new keeper, if we are to make a serious challenge in the Premiership next season.

The race for fourth seems a bit of a long shot for us now but if the Toon can do us a favour today and get a result against the blueshite then it could all open up for us again if we can beat the Gooners. The team have had a decent rest since the game on Tuesday so we should be at full strength and a result for the Toon today could inspire the lads to put on a winning performance against the Gooners and shut the mouth of their moaning manager.

Poor ole Arsene...you are now just another manager in the Premier League. No longer are you "THE" manager...get used to that :D

You brough French flair to the league and did well, now with your limitation outside EPL and Arsenal's rather poor financial muscle, you are found wanting. But don't turn into another Fergie please while I still have some respect for what you have done.

correctimundo signor

Basically what I've said in a previous post - its all about business and money talks especially where UEFA the FA and Sky TV and sponsors are involved. Surely the winners (regardless who it is) should be able to defend their title.

You just know that UEFA and even the FA want us to either win and get 4th spot or lose - but while writing this the bluenoses are one up against the Toon so we'll have to win and stir up a storm.

However I dont give a toss either way if we win the CL - that sweet feeling will easily last through one CL-less season....C'mon :buttrock

I just can't see where Arsene is coming from here.

As has been said, he supports Everton's right as 4th placed club yet then say's we are the Milwall of the Champions League & shouldn't even be in it!

Presumably, its ok by him for us to enter the competition from 4th place but its a bit cheeky to actually go on & progress to the final?!!

I don't even follow the mind games theory. If anybody from the club is actually affected by his bizarre ramblings, surely it can only serve to motivate our players on Sunday?

I've always had a certain amount of respect for the man (although mostly because he's so anti-fergie). However this sounds like the opinion of a jealous man under pressure & he's done himself no favours at all with this outburst.

Silly man.

Excellent point and one I hadn't realised  :kungfu:

It's actually a good sign when fellow Managers in the PREM start to crib about Liverpool FC, it shows they fear us and so they should.

Only the most pessimistic of LFC fans don't believe we will make a significant impact on next year's premiership season.

With a few new signings in the Summer, key players settling in and free from injury and Benitez at the helm..................... the futures bright , the futures RED

Actually, if our club doesn't win the league, the team that i'd rather see at the top would be arsenal, defo not stinky mancs, and i am disgusted with the notion of buying a title, hence not chelsea (not to mention jm).

after arsene's comments, which are really insulting and really uncalled for, may have to do some rethinking!  :p

we'll make arsene eat his words, i have a good feeling we'll finish above arsenal next season.  :buttrock
