Goalkeeper wants Liverpool
#450281 - 01/05/2005 16:33   Reply

AC Milan goalkeeper Dida has admitted that he would prefer to meet Liverpool in the final of the European Champions League rather than Chelsea.

Milan have a 2-0 advantage from their first leg win over PSV and look set to reach the final unless of course PSV can pull off some kind of fightback.

"It's really hard to say which team I'd rather face," said Dida. "But I suppose I'd prefer to avoid Chelsea. They are really strong at the moment and it is always difficult to play a team that is so ful of confidence.

"This doesn't mean I think that Liverpool are an easy option - no way. They would also be very hard to beat. So like I said, I prefer to wait and see. Engligh teams are all very tough."

Wenger: Watch out Liverpool
By D Ferguson
1 May 2005

Arsene Wenger has sent a warning to Liverpool ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League semi-final second leg at Anfield.

Liverpool held Chelsea to an unexpected draw at Stamford Bridge in the first leg and Wenger has warned them not to be complacent as Chelsea aren’t beaten yet despite Liverpool having the home advantage on Tuesday.

Wenger also believes that the team finishing fourth in the Premiership should qualify for the Champions League even if Liverpool go and win the thing.

Wenger told The Sun: “Liverpool have not got through the semi-final of the Champions League yet.

“There are still lots of possibilities and theories. But this should have been sorted out before.”

“You have to respect the Premiership.

“The top four finishers should be in the Champions League.

“You would have a big job convincing Everton otherwise if they finish fourth, particularly when Liverpool have lost 13 games this season.

“What rewards would there be otherwise? The championship is the driving force and indicates the value of a team

I'd start with Cisse and Baros up front from the start.  The first ten to twenty minutes are crucial, we need to start fast and keep the fans up.  That will scare the f**k outta them.

Kezman is a knob. I can't believe he's questioned the Anfield atmosphere. The guys a joke. Even if he scores tomorrow, so what? Crouch has scored past us - doesn't mean he's any good! And he ought to remember that the sh*te he plays for only beat us in the Carling Cup due to an own goal taking us into extra time. Up the 'pool!

                                                              Biscan
                     Gerrard
                                                                                        Riise

                          Garcia

Kezman laughs off Anfield atmosphere
#450276 - 01/05/2005 16:15   Reply

Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman has played down the hype about Liverpool's so called European atmosphere of fear.

The 12th man doesn't surface as much as he should do during the season but he'll definitely be present on Tuesday evening when Chelsea turn up full of confidence that they can knock us out of the Champions League.

Kezman, a player Gerard Houllier tried to sign, said: "Sure, they talk a lot about atmosphere at Anfield, but last time we played there I didn't see so much.

"It's more about history and tradition and we are not afraid of that. We've played in big atmospheres like Barcelona this season and we know what Anfield is like because we play in the same division as them.

"They are at home and the atmosphere will push them to go forward. So we are going to get the space - and with our spirit, we can do it.

"It will be a typical English game. Things are very tight. In the first half on Wednesday we had two or three opportunities to score and we didn't. And the second half was difficult, with no chances for either side. But it was a fantastic result for us and I'm almost sure we're going to play in the final. I think we have more quality. You never know, football is a strange game - but I am almost sure we are there in Istanbul."

Jose's run will end - Rafa

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez paid tribute to Jose Mourinho before insisting the Chelsea manager will be on the losing side when the teams meet on Tuesday in the second leg of the Champions League semi final.

Asked continually whether the 'special one' was the world's best coach, having now won the Premier League title to add to a string of European and domestic triumphs with Porto, Benitez cut to the point.

The question he faced was more of a statement: "In three years he has not stopped winning." Back came Benitez's answer: "Until tomorrow."

He continued: "Jose is one of the best coaches. He has a good team and he is a good manager so if you put together both those things, you have a winning formula.

"He works hard and knows the game, but we will try to do the same. It is difficult to say if he is the best coach, he is one of the best, sure. He has a very good team, sure. But they will lose tomorrow.

"Chelsea have the most expensive team in the world and a good manager. But we have our supporters and Chelsea do not hold the balance, it is 50-50. If you look at the money they have spent on their squad, maybe Chelsea have more to lose than us.

"I do not think them winning the championship will affect them, you must say well done to their team, their manager and their supporters and then say 'sorry' about the next competition because they will not win that."

Benitez will turn to his talismanic skipper Steven Gerrard - the player Chelsea have coveted for so long - to be the key to Liverpool reaching the 25 May final in Istanbul.

Benitez is increasingly convinced he will not lose his star man and has called on Gerrard to stamp his reputation on the game.

The Spaniard said: "In my opinion, Stevie will be the key player for us. He can change a game and you saw against Middlesbrough on Saturday the kind of goals he can score, and I'm sure he will play well.

"He knows that the supporters are behind him and he is the key player. He is fantastic, he can change the game.

"After his goal against Middlesbrough he would have heard the supporters as he celebrated and realised maybe how important he is for us and I am sure he will continue being an important player and want to play in more games like this for us.

"It is important when you play for a team for a lot of years and you can take them to the final and win. Stevie is like Jamie (Carragher), a local boy, and they have the passion that we want to see in all the players."

Benitez knows there will be passion from the terraces, and believes his erratic side can confound England's new champions.

He said: "We feel we have a good team, even if we are playing against one of the best teams in the world, they have spent a lot of money on good players. They have a lot going for them, but this is a challenge for us to beat them.

"We showed a European mentality at Stamford Bridge last week in the first leg and now we know we have our supporters behind us, it will make a difference.

"If you tell me you are 0-0 at home to Real Madrid, Barcelona or Chelsea I would be confident of getting the result we need. We want the final, we want to make history, we will be trying very hard for that.

"We will try to do our job, play as well as possible and to win. After watching my team and how they train, and seeing their faces, I have confidence in them.

"It is not easy to contain Chelsea, ask Barcelona and Bayern Munich. But with our supporters behind us I believe we can win.

"We have the best supporters in England and now we must show that we have the best supporters in Europe."
