Next season - Ins & outs

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

There will be more players going out than coming in, that I am sure. Pretty hectic summer coming up...
Players who don't get a look in or underperformed will leave, among them Vignal, Cheyrou, Smicer, Diouf, Diao, Smicer, Diarra, Baros & Mellor. Might have to offload Kewell and one of the keeper (prob Kirkland), and Hamann might leave as well (as he won't get many chances to start next season). If Gerrard does go, must insist on getting a couple of good players in part exchange (Gallas & Cole) otherwise Gerrard should stay! In Gallas comes, it will solve our defensive problem with Hyypia and Pellegrino capable deputies.
We should get Aimar and Baraja plus a top quality winger. I won't mind Owen returning if we have the engine room to supply him with ammunition. (Owen, Nando & Cisse  ) Other new signings will be to strengthen our squad. Then we will be a pretty treathening outfit...

If you don't get absolutely slaughtered for even suggesting the possibility of signing Nolan I'll be amazed. You're not allowed to go out on a limb on here, you have to wait until there is a concensus in the media and the guy is being talked about as 15 million pound player before you can suggest we sign someone from the Prem.
SWP? start of the season you got laughed at if you suggested we sign him. It's OK now of course. Ledley King? I DID get laughed at for suggesting him, same people now think he's a good player. I even had the tumerity to suggest that Cahill may make a player, what a numpty. Earnshaw? it's still out there and I'm not retracting it. Same goes for Damien Francis.
Nolan? decent player in my view. Goalscoring midfielder who probably finds it hard to stand out in a fairly direct Bolton side. Worth more to us than the fool Diouf? certainly.

Its not about suggesting other players from the prem mick. You know it aswell.

You stated those players at the start of the season, i said myself, Earnshaw, Francis and co all looked decent players. I agreed, good spot...

Nolan seems to consistently score 10 a season and is a big game player aswell... of that i have no doubt. However, are any of these good enough to perform at a champions league level...Nolan, maybe but we're never likely to find out.

I said about Ashton going to Norwich, i believe they've signed a player there who can really play at this level, and i mean at our end of the table. He has real potential.

There are lots of good players in the lower end of the league, but not many who are class, we need class. Not good players, We've got loads of good players.

The likes of:

Robert Green
Shaun Wright-Phillips
Danny Mills
Damien Francis
Dean Ashton
Robert Earnshaw

Are all  good players but the question is are they good enough to improve the top sides, the obvious answer is no.

I certainly would not include Danny Mills in that list. Mills had a decent 18 months at Leeds but he is a poor player.

His game involves agression and winding people up but little else.

agree with stu on this one, we need high quality players now to take us up that extra step. We have plenty of decent enough players, but what we lack is a few outstanding players that stand out what i mean by this is in the Alonso/Gerrard/Morientes level of quality. If you look at the likes of the top three and the big sides on the continent they have first elevens with at least 5 players of that quality.

So you don't think Shaun Wright-Philips would improve our side??

Not only that but he would push the likes of Giggs and Pires for their places if he were to go to the scum or arsenal

I don't think anybody is in dispute that we need top quality, class players. Equally, even I'm not suggesting that the likes of Robert Earnshaw or Damien Francis are in that bracket. There are, however occasions when class is not the issue. When we meekly succumbed at Southampton, Birmingham etc etc it wasn't a lack of class but a lack of collective desire that was the issue. Equally, when we had to go into games this season with Mellor as our leading striker, classs or lack of it was definately the issue then.
I'm merely saying that there are good players out there that the likes of Mark Lawrenson haven't spotted yet. Y'know what, I don't really care about his opinion anyhow, he said garcia was useless until about two weeks ago.
FWIW I have my doubts about Nolan. If we are going to go for a combative midfield player I would be more inclined to go for another bloke I got laughed at for suggesting earlier in the season. What a numpty I was for even suggesting it. Funny thing was, suddenly ManUre were interested. Didn't get him though, he went to Real Madrid. Thomas Graveson, come back to your favourite city but this time play for a club that's really going places.

I was one of the people that disagreed with you Mick over Earnshaw although I don't think I laughed at you for suggesting it.

I'm not sure of Earnshaw's quality although in many respects, he has proved me wrong this year.

I still stick by what I said though, and also (to a lesser extent) about what I said about Francis. Years ago under Souness and Evans we signed loads of players from teams lower down the division, guys that really stood out and looked a class act in those teams. When they came to Anfield what happened (almost without execption?)

They frooze in the limelight or thought they had hit the big time and almost all of them were a complete waste of money.

Vicente is a tremendous player but he has suffered with LOTS and LOTS of injuries this season at Valencia.

I think he has only played about 5 games ALL season.

Thanks for the comments about my last post guys. Sorry for lack of reply. Yes, I completely agree that we need world class players. The way that I judge Liverpool players is who would want to sign them if we put them on the transfer list tomorrow. Gerrard is world class because the likes of Chelsea and Madrid would wish to sign him if he was avaliable, but I cringe when I think of players like Dudek, Kewell and Smicer. Which top teams would want them? Yes, Liverpool can't afford bidding wars with Chelsea, Madrid and Milan for the best players but we can afford to pick up special players who are on the frindge of becoming big names. We seem to have picked up a bargin in Alonso and Garcia is ok. PFA nominees like Cech and Lampard didn't cost Chelsea the Earth and in fact cost alot less than Heskey and Diouf did.

By the way 'the great one', you have made a great shout on Van Bommell because, yes, he is the type of player we should be looking at. Only problem is that he seems destined to sign for Barcelona. Martin Jol (who has his ear to the ground in Holland) also stated that he has heard that Van Bommell going to Barca is pretty much rapped up. Shame

nice team but were have you thrown riise? surely he should have a place, dont agree with your right winger tho. I think since we have raised so much money through the champions league (how much is it already?) we should use it on a class right midfield and a central defender and left back, traore has done amazingly well and i have praised him for this season but im not sure he is up to being a first team player if we are goin for glory in the prem next year
