I dont think Rafa will have failed as you cant expect miracles to
happen over night,it would be annoying if we didnt finish fourh
to say the least but a failure i dont think so.

But im not sure if i agree with Dalglish about Stevie not needing
an excuse it would certainly make it easier for him to leave if we
werent playing champions league football next season...

rafa has not even reached his first year in Liverpool, but if we couldn't get 4th spot (which is now getting further), it would be very hard to accept we wouldn't be in the CL nest year.

failed would be if he failed to make an impact on the team whatsoever, yes there is the possibility we might not finish 4th but rafa has inspired so much confidence and spirit into the players and fans alike, he has taken us from the long ball merchants to a pretty exciting and attacking team with a bit of flair, and this is with most of players GH had, he has turned around players such as pongolle, traore and biscan and doesnt play players out of position, unlike GH rafa is a proven manager at the top level and won 2 spanish titles and the UEFA cup, he has a bit more tactical awareness than GH and the fact he hasnt bemoaned our endless list of injuries tells you a lot about the integrity of the man and his character

As long as we're pretty it doesn't matter that we're 6th.

Amazing how many people would now take all the hard faught battling wins in the world to win the champions and finish fourth.

good football, now all we need is the right players to play the way the team has to to compete

and no it wouldnt be a failure, would be disappointing, give him the years houllier got and then judge if he did better than houllier

I would say that one has failed if one had enough time to totally and deliberately had a hands on management in buying players, selling players and has had the opportunity to field one's strongest players with the playing satff that manager chose to purchase yet still did not manage to meet the set objectives.

In other words, if the manager had been given sufficient time to stamp his mark all over the clib's playing side, say at least over 2 seasons and still come up short then that maneger is a failure. Houllier was a failure because ha had so much time and money yet still fell short. Rafa Benithez cannot yet be compared to Houllier until the end of the second season at least.

No decision yet because we cannot compare like for like at this juncture. Liverpool Football Club still has a lot of awful players who were recruited by Houllier but cennot be rid of due to no one wanting them and had to be used because the club is not in the best of financial health to do a wholesale change.

Under Houllier we played more like a Wimbledon than an Arsenal. The day Liverpool F.C start playing like an Everton or a Mark Hughes' Blackburn will be a sad day for me indeed.

psy game? pessimism?

RAFA: WE CAN COPE WITHOUT CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Paul Eaton 20 April 2005

Rafael Benitez says Liverpool would be able to cope without Champions League football next season - as he urged his players to make one final push to ensure that scenario isn't realised.
The Reds take on Portsmouth at Fratton Park tonight knowing three points are essential if they're to close the gap on Everton and Bolton in the race for fourth.

Benitez knows his side could also qualify by winning the Champions League this season, but he is well aware things could easily go wrong over the remaining weeks of the campaign.

He said: "It would be great to be in the final of the Champions League but if we lose the final and don't finish in the top four then we won't be in the competition next season.

"We will fight until the very end though because we don't know how many points we might need to finish fourth. All we know is that we need more points than Everton and Bolton.

"It is very important to be in the Champions League and not only for the money. But if we need to work without the money from the Champions League next season then we can do it. We just need to work harder with our scouting department to find solutions for the future.

"I am not afraid of working outside the Champions League next season, but we want Champions League football."

He added: "If we do not qualify for fourth place because Everton or Bolton win their remaining games then we will work even harder to improve next season. I am sure we will be very close to Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United next year whether we are in the Champions League or not.

"In any job you know more about it in the second year than in the first and so I am sure we will be better."

Most people said that it wouldn’t be a failure if we finished outside the top 4 and didn’t win the Champions League, I said it would.

Rafa and his staff seem to agree with me.

Rafa is no chump, he knows we should have done better in the league, even with all our injuries. He sets high but achievable standards, he wants long term success, and is not happy with our league performances.
