Is alonso the best passer in world football

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

This isn't a knee jerk reaction. I watch football from all leagues and im in no doubt that Xabi is the best. Whether short or long, cross or through the lad has it all.

Losing Gerrard will be a blow but this man will carry us on, with SG them too will be frightening.

Even going back to great passers like Platini, Molby, Souness, Gullit and more recently Zidane, im sure this boy would be up there with them.

He dictated the game today it was a joy to see Liverpool being orchestrated by someone other than Gerrard. I just hope Stevie can see the potential and stay cos them two together are gonna be something that will rival the best in the game.

What do the rest think?

Ps: Lets not go down the gerrard will he wont he saga on this thread please. Im sick of it

Yes Xabi is the best player at Liverpool and yes he is the best passer in the world.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Alonso's display today was probably the best performance I've seen from a midfielder ANYWHERE all season.

Haven't seen the game yet.  Had to ask a grocer in Whitechapel the score this afternoon.  Was a bit disappointed with the draw but it sounds like we weren't that bad this afternoon from reading the reaction from you lot.  Can't wait to see Alonso on MOTD later.

Saying that, MOTD will probally show all Stevie G's best bits, leave out Alonso's, and then Moustacheless Lawrenson will probably say that if Gerrard played for Chelsea, the goalpost would have moved a yard to the side and the penalty would have gone in - just because he plays for Chelsea.  The game finishes 4 - 2 to Liverpool and then Chelsea would have got the three points by default, because Gerrard is surely going to be a Chelsea player and the points will be backdated.

Lawrenson's getting up my nose now like Tyldesley; who, no matter what match he's watching in the Champions League, will find occasion to reference Manchester United's thrilling come-from-behind last minute Final win in 1999 at least half a dozen times throughout the course of the match.

I mean totally ridiculous stuff too, like--"the air in the ground is electric right now, just like that magical night in Barcelona in 1999 when United scored two late goals to come back and win it all,"

Or maybe even "Of course, Milan are wearing red, the same color Manchester United wore that magical night in Barcelona when they scored two late goals....you get the idea.

Occassionally a player comes along, who is such a master at his craft, that it becomes a privellege to pay your money just to watch that player. To mention a few....Keegan,Dalglish,Souness,Barnes........I have no doubt in my mind that Xabi Alonso will be reverred as one of the greatest midfield maestros of our time. This lad will not only orchestrate the change in fortunes for our club, but he will undoubtedly be one of Spain's great all-time heroes.
I said at the early stages of this season that he was a joy to watch and if it wasn't for the Mourinho/Lampard assassination attempt in December we would have well secured 4th if not 3rd by now.

If there was ever a day to show the difference in quality passing between Alonso and Gerrard, well today was that day.Of course there will be occassions of a mis-placed pass but percentage wise 90% completion for Xabi and 40% for Steven says it all.Saying that I would love Gerrard to announce that Chelsea would be the last club he would ever wish to play for.
THERE'S A GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL TOMORROW SHINING AT THE END OF EVERY DAY.
THERE'S A GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL TOMORROW AND TOMORROW IS JUST A DREAM AWAY.

Spot on comments from everybody in this thread. I consider it a privalege to watch Alonso and stil lfind it hard to believe he's only just returned to action after, as some have suggested he was "done" on New Years Day.

I called him a freak of nature after his superhuman performance on Wednesday night agauinst the not so mighty Juventus and today he showed why we have missed him and his creative skills so much......

Earlier this season when he played a masterclass performance against Norwich I commented that it was in the Top 10 performances i had personally seen by a Liverpool player at Anfield . Today's was probably the 11th ! :D

means f@ck all them percentage stats. i remember a game when redknapp and barnes had 90 odd percent passing ratio`s and so many hundred passes completed and we didnt create a f@cking thing all game, just kept the ball for the sake of it.
i moaned in those days that we were not direct enough, then we got houllier. never was the old chesnut be careful what you wish for more apt. i paid for that wish all right.

I think Supersub only used them to illustrate a point.

Not only was Alonso's passing great, but he also showed some footwork Barnes or Daglish would have been proud of.
